How do you come up with ERA's?

    It's the number of earned runs mulitiplied by 9 then divided by the number of innings pitched.

    number of earned runs allowed times 9 divided by number of innings pitched. This does not include unearned runs.

    If a pitcher gives up 2 earned runs in 8 innings of work it's 2 times 9 (18) divided by 8 the answer would be 2.25

    Simple;

    you average the number of earned runs per 9 innings.

    Hence the name: EARNED RUN AVERAGE
