Do I need a car seat base?

I got a graco infant car seat for my baby shower. Do I need the base to the car seat to bring the baby home.

Check the manual that came with the seat. Most do not require the base. However, it is generally easier to get a secure installation at the proper angle with the base. Newborns need the car seat to be installed at a 45 degree angle so the infant's head does not flop forward and cut off it's airway. You can use a rolled up towel in the seat crease to help get this angle. If you do need to use the seat base-less, be sure that along with the proper angle, you also get it installed tightly, locking the seatbelt by either pulling the belt all the way out and letting it ratchet back in, or using a locking clip. There should be less than one inch of movement side to side and front to back at the belt path. Sometimes it's easier to get a good fit with a base-less infant seat by installing the seat first, without the baby in it, so someone can more easily and safely use their weight on the seat to secure the belt tightly.
