Why the hate on for Paid in Full - Eric B & Rakim?

I've noticed this trend in a few recent threads. It is almost universally accepted by hip hop afficianados as the greatest hip hop album of all time yet there are people on here calling it "overrated", they'll "never listen to it", "its junk" etc etc. In my 3+ years of being on this board this is the first time I've seen a consistent pattern like this. Why do you think that is?

Update:

The album is wack by today's standards according to Cap and 54. That's a bold statement, especially since so many people are calling hip hop dead. I agree that the sound isn't 'modern', in fact I would even agree that its 'outdated' but you can never call it wack. Its almost blasphemous.

Some people in this section are strange. They'll do anything to defy convention. It's kind of like they hop on a reverse bandwagon. Anything that widely accepted as great, they want to hate, and anything that's widely accepted as terrible, they want to love. I guess basing their opinion on the opposite of what everyone else thinks is their way of proving that they have a mind of their own. Ironic. My favorite part is when they realize that other people are doing the same thing as them, so they just become indifferent.

  • Bandwagon effect. Some people can't make up their own opinions.

I never would call "Paid In Full" overrated or garbage. But I never thought it was the best rap/hip-hop album, top 10, though. I always felt "Follow the Leader" is just as great too and at times is the better album. Basically, they're on the same level of quality, IMO, except "Paid In Full" has the greater influence obviously as it's Rakim's debut.

It's just how this section is. Whichever album hip hop heads deem the greatest of all time, everyone calls overrated. It happened with Illmatic too. The only person with legitimate disdain for Paid in Full is 54. Everyone is else is trying to be different without realizing that by trying to be different as a group they're all the same.

The album has aged terribly. In the context of its release, Paid In Full is beast. But if you look at as an album released yesterday, It's terrible. For an album that holds so much weight in arguments of greatest hip hop records to date, It doesn't appeal to the newer school of fans - who won't appreciate it and disregard its influence or its quality for the time it was released. Considering most newer fans can to a point find quality in older records (generally speaking), Paid In Full is a dud for a lot of them.

That and maybe people are being difficult, The Seventh Seal made a lot of people question Rakim's credentials as "The God MC" Which further strengthens my view that whenever an artist with an 80's 90's debut releases a record in the 2000's/Years after their debut that isn't particularly good, They tap into a market of listeners who aren't necessarily familiar with their music previous to that release. And brand that artist wack/overrated without considering the artists previous work.

I'm personally more of a G Rap dude. But I think the hate is a bit much in places.

I dont know... Call me naive, but maybe they just dont like the album. People come and go on here and it might be some new cats stating how they feel.

Personally I enjoy it. Its an album I grew up listening too.

Sigh. The album (like Cap said) is wack by todays standards. But I mean its an 80's album so you can't really expect it to be up to todays standards. If it weren't rated so highly (and for all the wrong reasons) I would just dismiss it as what it really is, another 80's album that I don't like. But people get all up on Rakim's d*ck for supposedly "inventing" multi's when A. It's not true and B. Even if it were true, it doesn't matter. Then people claim that "Rakim invented flow." Do I even need to elaborate on why that is retarded. I don't think so. Basically it annoys me that it seems like people are going out of their way to try and find ways to call someone the GOAT who clearly doesn't deserve that title. If people just said "Paid In Full is the GOAT album because it was never surpassed in quality" then I would dismiss that as simply a difference of opinion. But when people ride it for being "innovative" it just gets on my nerves.

the album was cool but nothing that interesting to me and the fact that im not a Rakim fan.

  • I wouldn't call it the best ever but it is mos def very good. It is a great album and I think whoever calls it trash is trying to seem "hip"

A classic album that was great for its time.

But let's not kid ourselves here; we'd all bump 50 other albums before we even begin to think about listening to Paid In Full. To be point blank, those dreadful, outdated melodies, defined by Rakim's substandard lyrics doesn't appeal in this era. And no, I'm not a hater. I'm just being honest.

idk. i thought it was a great album, start to finish. i dont know why people here hate on it so much. i guess some people dont enjoy classic hip hop. but i dont understand how a person here can say Illmatic was good, but Paid in Full sucks. it doesnt make any sense to me.
