Why did Fred Phelps want to boycott the funerals of VT students that were killed in 2007?

Because (allegedly) he's a nut-job with 1/2 a brain-stem. You have to be careful what you say about Phelps, because he has family members who are lawyers, and I have heard (don't know if true) that they sometimes phish boards like this to get fodder for lawsuits.

Oh my, Its a long complicated story.

Basically the Phelps run this wacked out church that is very anti-American and blames Americas problems on anything and everything that happens. If a plane crashes, they show up and protest and say that the plane crash was God punishing America. If a soldier dies in Iraq, they show up at the funeral saying that soldiers death was God punishing America. Same thing with the Virginia Tech shootings, they claim this was done as punishment from God because he hates America. They also believe that God hates gays, in fact their slogan and the name of the churches website is "God Hates Fags".

These people should not reflect on religion or Christianity. These people only are using the name of God and Christianity as a front to get their way. They use their freedom of speech and freedom of religion to protest and say these horrible things and then if someone tries to stop them they sue, if they show up in some city and want to protest and are stopped they sue the city. Currently they have dozens of lawsuits pending against many cities and groups in America due to this. Many times cities will just pay them off to get them to go away. Its really the perfect money making scheme, they say things so hurtful and so outrageous that it pisses people off so bad that someone does something to try to physically stop them and then the church sues due to a violation of their rights.

Who can fathom why Fred Phelps does what Fred Phelps does? The short answer is that he's completely psycho. Bat$hit insane.
