Do you really believe that you need to be bilingual to work in Miami, Florida or is this prejudice?
I have been unemployed in Miami since February of last year. Most of the job ads are for bilingual candidates in Monster and Career builder. How do they get away with this? Any spanish speaking person in Miami that has any kind of money and wants to do business in Miami speaks English. Why do I need to speak spanish? I work in the accounting department mostly in accounts payable. I have never needed to speak spanish except with the cleaning lady and the gardener. Except for one job I had in my 15 years of experience where I had 63 contractors. Three had trouble with english but still knew the basics. I pay the bills. I get invoices in english. I am not in sales or on the switch board. My fellow employees speak english or both languages. I feel like it is an insult to my intelligence to try to tell me I need to be spanish speaking to get a job in an accounting dept. One boss I had in my past was honest and just wanted me to be spanish speaking to be able to get along with the girls in the office! What a crock! You don't need Spanish to cut checks and reconcile the GL. You don't need spanish to do a job that does not require you to answer the phone or do sales. As far as I know only a bank would really require spanish or a grocery store. Am I right or is this prejudice?

Well welcome to Miami lol. I am very sorry about your employment situation. Miami is very spanish speaking and they prefer that language. I know I know it isn't right, but for Miami that is just how it is now. Alot of places in Broward are getting like that also. I really hope you find something! Are you far from Broward? Maybe you could find employment in that area. How long have you been in Miami and where are you from?

It's not personal, it's just business.
It is not an insult to your intelligence but rather a personal asset to a corporation to have people who can speak more than one language. Employers prefer college graduates over high school graduates (even if the college degree was in Romance Languages.) The expectation for the company is that they will be getting a better educated and more well-rounded individual.
When it comes to being bilingual more and more companies are looking to reach out to immigrants to increase their profit margin. Have you noticed all the labels on products with instructions in Spanish now? Whether people are here legally or not, people of Latin origin are our fastest growing nationality population-wise. Learning another language also shows that you are a team player and culturally sensitive which are valuable skills.
My Spanish is awful, my German is worse, my ASL is okay, and my French and Hawaiian are laughable, but knowing them helps me connect with other people from all walks of life. Take a class or check out some free language materials from your local public library. Remember, it's not about you, it's about what image the company wants to project and the type of environment it wants to foster. We're still The Great American Melting Pot. [see YouTube video]
