How is copper oxide (CuO) reduced using carbon?

    CuO + CO -(high temperature)-> Cu + CO2

    My guess is that carbon reacts with the oxygen to form CO2, but if it were me, I'd be using something more to the left of the periodic table to steal away the oxygen.
