For film slrs, Nikon is better because all of its current lenses can mount and meter/autofocus on them (excluding manual-focus only cameras) Canon ditched its old mount when going into the digital age, meaning all their current lenses will not be able to mount onto their film cameras. Instead, you would have to shop around for second-hand lenses.

For digital, Nikon and Canon or more line in line with each other. Canon's usually have better resolution than Nikons (though the gap closes considerably at high isos). However, Nikon's offer better system compatibility (with older lenses made during the film-era) and better, faster, and more accurate autofocusing in general. In my own humble opinion, the Nikon also wins in real-world ergonimics. Their bodies are surprisingly comfortable to hold, with logical button placement, while some Canons- especially their entry level dslrs, feel downright awkward to use and hold. Their grip is too small, and their dials are made of hard plastic and provide too much resistance for comfortable use over extended periods of time.

If you dont own any previous accessories/lenses for either system, I suggest you go and check out reviews for the cameras you are interested in. Go to a store and hold and use each camera to see which one is the most comfortable. Hope this helped. Good luck!

I have used both all my life. I started shooting Canon DSLRs more than anything else in 2007 but, I've used Nikons quite a bit since then as well because it was what was given to me. I think they are equally good but there are lots of folks who think their favorite brand is better with no ability to really explain why. As mentioned, I currently shoot Canon (7D and 40D) but I would shoot Nikon without hesitation. In fact, before buying my 7D, I cam very close to switching to Nikon but ultimately decided against it because of a large investment in Canon lenses.

that's probably never ending story and there is no one answer for that.

Personally I never used Nikon so don't know but I can definitely say only good things about Canon.

I think its really depend what do you need from your camera and what you gonna do with it and of course how much you going to spend...
