How many senior citizens remember the family doctor making house calls and...?

Was a doctor paid at the end of a house call or billed you later? Do you remember if it cost extra for house calls as opposed to office visits?

Our farm was between the Dr's office and the hospital. I remember once when he stopped on his way to the hospital when 4 of us kids had the measles and another time on his way home when my mother fainted an hr. earlier. My parents were billed later. He delivered all 6 of us, and I later worked with him delivering babies at the same hospital. He would have delivered mine, but we moved. My father had his tonsils removed on the dining room table as a child. (same house)

Yes I do remember quite well the doctor making house calls in Ohio as a child. I don't think any money ever changed hands, but I do know that my family gave him a good deal on his new car every year. Today here in Honduras my doctor makes house calls when ever I am not feeling well, I pay as I go, no insurance

In the 40's when most of us kids were all getting the usual communicable diseases, the Dr's in my small Kansas town always made house calls. The only time you would have an office visit was if you needed to go to the hospital lab for tests.

Usually when the Dr did come to your house, he would attach a quarantine sign on your front door!

I have no idea how or when he was paid.

In the 50's my folks lived in rural town and the doctor made visits when my cousin who came for a visit came down with scarlett fever. He just billed the family and he didn't charge any extra, according to my mom.

I remember the family doctor who came to our home , with his little black bag . I think he was paid at the end of his visit . Probably cost a bit more , having him home , than going to see him . He was like a family friend . So much nicer and more comforting , than all the cold , clinical whitecoats nowadays !

I was born in a hospital, but Dr. Schnell, who delivered me, also made house calls. I remember him vaguely when I was very ill with phneumonia. I remember seeing my room filled to the brim with turkeys.

Actually, I couldn't breathe. I called mom and she had the doctor over and he said my fever was too high and I was halucinating and if it didn't come down that night, I was to go to the hospital.

I remember the shot and that's all.

This was in the late '40's so I don't know how he charged or expected pay.

I remember hearing my grand parents talking about this.

They said they didn't have to pay him if they didn't have

the money and would sometimes barter for payment.

My son is in the military in Germany.

My grand daughter has a heart problem.

Her heart doctor makes house calls on

a regular basis when she is having problems.

EDIT: by the way very good question...

In the late 50's / early 60's, our doctor made house calls in the winter with a snow plane.

Two huge propellers, and it never left the ground.

Summer time, he used a Cadillac.

i never had one myself, but my grandfathers doctor made housecalls up till the late 60's,early 70's.i dont think he did it for everyone, mainly his long term, elderly patients who could no longer get around.my vet has a mobile clinic today, and my pets get housecalls! im sorry i dont know how my grandfathers dr was paid,i was a kid and not privy to that info.i was impressed he got housecalls, tho! as for the mobile vet,i pay at the end of the visit, depending on the diagnosis/treatment of the various pets.the mobile vet does not cost extra,he is cheaper than a regular vet as he doesnt pay rent/overhead for a building.he pays other local vets to do surgeries at their clininc on certain days,so it works out .maybe this is similatr to a human dr doing housecalls.oh,come to think of it,we have a dr who does housecalls today, here in town.we have not used her services, but i recall my wife mentioning this to me awhile back.so,maybe thisconvenient practise is reviving.
