9.9 Honda boat motor runs great until I put it in gear.?

On my sailboat, the motor runs fine in neutral, revs up, has good rpms etc. But when I put it in forward, it just won't run above a very slow speed and even when I try to rev it the motor just won't respond. Have any idea why it runs fine in netural but not when in gear?

the engine is running on one cylinder.Check that the plug wires are tight on the spark plugs ;check for spark on both plugs, change the plugs. If there is anything beyund these simple checks and repairs you should take the motor to a qualified mech.

maybe all the plugs aren't firing - so in N its fine, but losing power under load. I'd also double check to make sure nothing is caught or wrapped around the prop or shaft. Other than that - its mechanic time.
