  • why is the sound on my computer distorted?

windows xp, the sound is very distorted. had a virus professionaly removed, and since then this started happening. speakers are not the problem, all hooked up correctly.

i'm also getting messages constantly that Internet Explorer has blocked something because of security certificate errors. Any link between the two? Anyone know what the default sound driver is called for XP, or the recommended name to choose to run sound? I'm seeing so many options when i look into the media or sound settings?

    Need help.

  • How do you post your answer to a question?

I feel like an idiot for not figuring out how to post an answer to an open question on this "new" yahoo answers configuration. Unless there's a glitch in mine, I see no way of "posting" or "continue" after you type in the answer.

I'm only opening OPEN questions. Then I see the text box that you type in. Then it says optional for your source, then there's the add media spot for pictures, etc. But below that there is no way to finish! I see no continue button, or post button anywhere?! Please help!

PS - below this box right now I do see a Continue button and a Cancel button, but thats not there when I Answer a question, just the Community Guidelines and Read more blue links.

  • Dishwasher is leaving spots, anyone know how the rinse aid mechanism works?

Please read the entire post before answering, thanks!

My dishwasher sometimes leaves spots on the dishes, glasses, etc.

We try to use the rinse aid but I suspect it's not working right - because when you unscrew the cap to the rinse aid it always seems partially full - it never quite empties even after many cycles.

What I want to know is how does this rinse aid mechanism work anyway? How does it know to dispense the rinse aid liquid only during the final rinse cycle?

I do not need to know how or why the rinse aid liquid works - I would like to know how this screw-in cap actually dispenses the liquid and I can go from there.

All over the internet, nothing mentions HOW the thing works, every post just says how and why you need rinse aid, and why the liquid does what it does. But again, I want to know if the rinse aid container/cap is functioning right.

By the way, I've already tried the vinegar solution, and it still won't dispense the liquid. It always remains mostly full after several cycles - even without adding more it never empties.

BTW its a slightly older Maytag washer, with a mechanical rinse aid container/screw on cap. Nothing appears wrong with it to the eye, it just won't dispense. There are no electrical connections to this cap or dispenser, just a plastic screw on cap with a clear plastic bulb in the middle of it.

Also, the drying selection buttons say "Temp Sense" 'On' or 'Off'. Which is better, I don't have the manual and can't find it online. I assume temp sense means it will shut off after it hits a certian temperature during drying time? I'm asking because sometimes it seems very wet inside after the cycle, like it didn't dry enough either. But if you open the door after the cycle is done it's definitely warm in there, so I know the heating element is at least working to some degree. I get pools of water in cups and things that have flipped back over during the cycle and I have to pour them out, makes a wet mess. I guess this is normal though right? If you put a cup upside down but then it flips back over, your going to get a puddle in it no matter what right?

Thanks and sorry for the long post.

  • Can shark week focus on more than great whites and megaladon?

I know it's entertaining, but shark week seems to focus on 2 things: great whites that jump out of the water off the coast of south africa, and megaladon - a prehistoric / extinct fish thats been gone for over 2 million years. These are 2 very cool, interesting facets of sharks, but there are over 300+ different species of sharks, each with unique characteristics that are also fascinating and hundreds of facts that will captivate audiences. Megaladon is cool and all, but it's extinct, yet fake pictures and grainy footage (just like ufo's, lock ness, and bigfoot) are really what they're calling shark week now? I just watched an episode where they built a gigantic fake sperm whale lure and chumed 10 miles of ocean to try to lure in a megaladon - I mean are they serious? Also, does anyone else think that nearshore feeding (such as huge chum slicks like this and charters that feed to please sightseers) are a bad idea - then they wonder why someone on the beach gets bitten nearby? Isn't this common bad sense? How about jabbing sharks with things like ice picks to hook a monitor into their flesh - you think that might be outlawed anytime soon? Let me know your thoughts, thanks. My motto is humans are the biggest threat to sharks, leave them alone and they'll do just fine.

  • Need tech advice on HDMI cable from computer to a TV?

What I want to do is simple: Connect a line from my computer hard-drive to a tv in another room. I want to be able to see whats on my computer on my TV screen.

Here are the details. I have a dell computer, with a flatscreen monitor, and with a regular tower hardrive. on the front of the hard drive, there are 2 hdmi cable slots - the same slot that you can plug a thumb drive into, or some call it a travel drive?

My tv has several connectors, and will receive hdmi cables as well.

Now, can I just run an hdmi cable from this hardrive and into the tv and be able to see it as a second monitor?

The other question is this: on the back of my hard drive, there is a different kind of connector that my dell monitor plugs into - i don't know what this connector is called, but its larger and screws in on the sides of a multi-point plug. Next to this there is an empty plug, the same kind, on my hard drive. I don't know if my tv has this kind of connector or not.

So, what would you suggest? Would an hdmi cable bring video and audio signals from computer to tv. Or do I have to use that second (computer screen plug) to the tv?

    thanks for any help.

  • ideas on how to stop dog pee from killing grass?

so the problem happens to a lot of people. my dog pees on the grass, and it kills the grass. i get circles of "burn" yellowing grass and eventually it dies. now, I know that watering the grass after each and every pee would stop it, but in no way is that possible, I'm not about to follow the dog and water the spot she pees in. I know there are pills you can give the dog to stop yellowing the lawn, but I'd rather not - not too sure if its safe for the dog in the long run. So, is there anything else that can be done? Ever hear of a special grass seed thats stronger than others and will stand up to this problem? I'ver heard about giving the dog some tomato juice each day, and that could neutralize the pee? Any truth to that? Any other home rememdies or fertilizers like lime or anything? Please help, I like my lawn, and I like my dog, but want this to stop. Plus walking the dog somewhere else each time is not really possible either.

  • Name all the missed calls you remember from the Superbowl.?

It's no question that the Ref's in the Superbowl were very laxed - or lets just look the other way. Especailly, it seems against the 49'ers. First off, I'm not a 49'ers fan, or even a Ravens fan, I'm neutral on this one. So, from a neutral perspective, I saw a lot of weird things going against the 9'ers last night, sometimes thats just the way it works out in sports, but other times somethings going on - can you smell a fix? I don't remember which Raven had the ball, but a big gain was made and he blatenly stiff-armed a 9'ers guy to the face. Now, I haven't played football in a while, but isn't that illegal hands to the face? Anyone else catch that play. Not only was there no call, but he gained like an extra 10 yars in the process cause the guy couldn't reach him to tack him, his face and head was being pushed back! We all saw the holding no-call at the end, thats obvious. But even w/o the call, the ball was too far outta bounds in my opinion to be caught, he would need like 10' long legs to stay in, plus he was pushing off a bit too. So anyway, I wanna hear your no-calls that you saw, either way.

I'm not being a crybaby that the 9'ers lost - remember I didn't really care who won this game - I just want to analyze the reffing, or lack of, see if you saw anything i missed. Please don't respond with the "dude, the 9'ers lost, get over it" thing. For what it's worth, I think the Ravens just played better football, had more gutsy plays esp. the deep passes they kept going for, and the 9'ers play calls were pretty bad at times, esp at the end, but this is a whole other story.

    Thanks.

  • Fog lights aren't working?

My jeep fog lights aren't going on. They were working fine a few weeks ago, then all of a sudden won't go on. Plus, on the dashboard switch, there's a little light that goes on (on the actual switch), and that light is not going on either. My manual says nothing about where the fog light fuse is, they only mention a fog light relay which in in the engine compartment box. I pulled it, but its impossible to tell if its bad - it looks and smells fine, not burnt or anything, but its only a square box relay with prongs coming out, I don't know how to test that.

By the way, I know you need your headlights on to turn on the fogs, so thats not it either. Every other electrical component on my car works fine, just the fogs are out.

Any help or ways to diagnose would be helpful. Its not the bulbs either, there's not way both bulbs would go out at the same time. Plus, something is making that switch on the dash not light up.

  • Help - boat is overheating?

Last time out, I noticed on the way in my boat was running hot. It is a mercruiser, v8, 350 with Alpha outdrive. It is raw water cooled, I use it in salt water.

Boat had been running great all year, no problems at all.

At first I thought it was because of barnacles and other build up at the intake holes on the outdrive. So, got back to the boat and scraped it all down, got rid of a lot of stuff.

With engine cooled off, I started it up. No luck, it slowly climbed up and past the normal temp wich is always about 150 F. It was just under 200 last time running, and I shut it down before it got to that temp again.

I noticed, though, that in idle, if I reved up the engine a little, it brings down the temp a little, almost imediately.

I went and felt cooling hoses at the engine and here's what I found. The 2 hoses that connect direclty to the thermostat housing were cool (these also connect to the exhaust manifolds, I believe), and it felt like there was running water thru them.

The other hoses that go to the water pump were hot, but I also felt water running thru them I believe.

Other details - there is no leaking or screaching or any signs that the water pump is bad (at least the one on the engine itself). The belt is tight and turning the water pump just fine.

Now, I believe there is another Impeller water pump in the outdrive. This has not been changed in a long time, but again I see no signs that water isn't running thru the system.

The boats in the water, so its hard to see if water is actually coming out thru the exhaust holes. Its a pain to take the boat out, or I would hook it up to the ear muffs and run water thu this way, to at least see if water is in fact running up and thru the engine, then out the exhaust like it should.

Since my first guess was wrong I believe (clogged water intakes at the outdrive), my next guess is a sticking thermostat, or bad thermostat. I really don't think its the acutal waterpump - its not wobbling or doing anything like its bad. And, I can feel water running thru the hoses by pinching them.

    Any help from here???

Final question, can I take off the thermostat housing while the boat is in the water? This is on the higher end of the engine, well above the water line. I just didn't want water gushing in from the outside!

  • Need audio-video help with DVD/TV problem!?

Ok, got an older TV without the remote control. Tried to hook up a DVD player to it, and got nothing. Without the remote, I tried to find a usable signal channel with the TV menu buttons, but found nothing. So, I got a universal remote and was able to find the Input channel (00) I think. Now, I hear the audio, so sound is working, but there's no video at all. In fact, the screen says "unusable signal". Its NOT the DVD player, in fact its doing the same thing when I hook up a playstation to it. I have sound, but no video. And its NOT the wires, they are hooked up right and I've tried 2 different yellow video wires.

  • Old Dexter lock with no key - need to replace cylinder?

I have an old dexter lock with no key. Its to an older style deadbolt. I'm trying to either re-key it, or replace the inside cylinder. I already tried the hardware stores to find a cylinder with no luck. I'd rather avoid paying a lot with a locksmith, so any advice out there? Anyone know where to buy a re-keying kit maybe online or in stores? Anyone know of a website where I can buy a new key cylinder for an old dexter lock? Again, I'd rather avoid a locksmith shop if I can.

By the way, this is an older, odd-shaped deadbolt. It's not a standard hole, its smaller. I do not want to just put in a new deadbolt, and I don't see this size anymore in the stores, thats why I want to keep this deadbolt hardware, but just re-key it or replace the inner key part.

    Thanks!

  • Is there a way to make toilet bowl fill with more water?

My toilet bowl doesn't seem to fill very high with water. It's probably one of those "water saver" toilets. Anyway, is there a way to make it fill higher with water.

If you raise the water level in the toilet tank, does that make the bowl fill higher?

Does putting a brick in the tank like in the old days do anything to raise the bowl level, or is that just an old way to save water?

Would replacing the fill valve in the tank raise the water level in bowl?

    Thanks!

  • How far away does exterior gas dryer vent need to be from elec. outlet?

Need to put in a gas dryer vent on exterior wall from my house. There is an exterior electrical outlet near the spot I want to put the vent cap. Anyone know the building code for this, or is there one? Remember, this is a gas dryer, so I assume it's more important than a regular elec. dyer vent.

  • Why is it legal to photo or videotape celebs, but....?

I was wondering about the laws of privacy, or lack there of, and when it comes to photos or videotapes of people in public, or private settings. For example, its ok to photo celebrities while they're on a beach on vacation, or getting coffee at the local java joint, and plaster them all over the internet, TV, and magazines.

But! When you see other programs on TV, the bystanders are often blurred out, usually because they did not sign a permission waiver to allow them to be shown.

So, where is the descrepancy here, what is the law, and why do some people get to be blurred out, while others are "fair game".

In my opinion, it should be illegal to stalk people and sneak shots in when they are in public, unless they give permission. This is harrassment, it should be against some kind of privacy law, or one should be written if there aren't any common sense laws in place. Think of how many hundreds or even thousands of frivilous lawsuits happened because this problem, and how many wasted tax dollars and courthouse time has been wasted.

  • How to block an email address - spam isn't working!?

I keep getting spam from the same email address. I think a friends account was hacked, because it comes from someone I know, yet they are not sending it.

Anyway, EVERYTIME I get junk email from this account, I SPAM it - yet I still get email from that account.

I thought there used to be a way to BLOCK an address in Yahoo mail, but I can't find that option anywhere. I also thought SPAM was supposed to block an address, or at least send it to your SPAM folder, not your inbox folder.

    Any help for me?

PS: I often "empty" my spam folder just because there is so much in there - does that mean those deleted emails can now get into my inbox next time they send something to me?? Do I HAVE to keep all spam addresses in my spam folder for them to be blocked?

  • What is the name of this door hinge pin? Its hollow...?

I need to replace a door pin on my car door. But, when I look up parts for this, all I see are solid, brass looking door hinge pins - they look just like a hinge pin on a door for your house. This is NOT the part I'm looking for. There is another pin that looks hollow to me, which is connected to a a metal "arm" that extends into the door frame. I believe this arm is meant to keep the door from swinging open too far. So again, it's not the actual hinges for the door, its this pin that holds this arm to the door frame. What is this pin called so I can order one???

  • PVC pipe glue - how to remove to fix leak?

I have a small leak in a PVC pipe joint. When I noticed the leak at first, the glue was totally worn away and the pipe joint was free. There wasn't much wiggle room as the rest of the piping was pretty sturdy next to it. So, I coated it like usual with pipe joint glue, pressed it together the best I could, and it seemed to hold. Then, I recoated all around the joint again after it dried. Problem is, there was still a little water in the pipe, and it pushed through while drying, to still create a small drip through 2 little pinholes. I tried to recoat again with no luck! The small amount of water is for some reason making its way through and making little pin hole drips. So, now I have a sealed joint with glue, and I don't think I'll stop the leak with more glue added to it.

I don't want to have to cut away the pipe for several reasons, mainly b/c the T that leaking is very had to get to. I want to somehow remove the glue so I can start over and re-glue this joint. I used some stuff called Rain N Shine, thats supposed to be able to glue while a little wet, but I guess NOT. So, is there a product that will dissolve this glue on contact so I can remove and start over w/o cutting any pipe away? Can I heat it until the glue softens? Next time, I'm going to use better joint glue and make sure the pipe is completely dry.

Or, 1 more thing - is there a super-strong glue or something I can seal this joint with while its already glued to stop these small pin-hole leaks? Will JB weld work? Something like that meant for PVC pipe leaks???

    Thanks a million......
