Do you athiests know that the founder of the Red cross was a christian?

The following is in his bio: Henry Dunant founder of the Red cross, worked with groups that sought to draw young men of all nations into a Christian union. He was influential in the founding of the International YMCA, which had its first meeting in Paris in 1855. At other periods he was interested in projects for the bringing together of Christians and Jews, for the founding of a Jewish settlement in Palestine, and for promoting international peace.

Dunant was brought up a Protestant and was early led toward piety and good works, in which the example of his mother was particularly strong. As a young man, he belonged to the Geneva League of Alms and worked to relieve poverty and illness. In his old age, he disclaimed membership in any particular church. "I am a disciple of Christ, as in the first century, simply that," he wrote.

Therefore your saying that the Red cross is not based on christian values is faulty because it was founded on them. See http://www.sbredcross.org/about/archistory.htm

There was an atheist here a couple of days ago extolling the virtues of atheist groups contributing to the Haiti earthquake relief. One of the groups he mentioned was the Red Cross.

It's Red "Cross" for a reason.

Almost every one in Europe was a Christian in those days, so no surprise.

The Red Cross is based on humanitarian concerns, its founder may well have been a Christian, but the organisation is not itself Christian but independent of any religious affiliations. The flag is an inversion of the Swiss flag, if I remember rightly, not a religious symbol.

I thought that the Red Cross was found by a Christian, but I don't have evidence to back that up

Lots of things start out one way and end up doing something else. Some colleges that used to be white only and male only are now coed and integrated.

The organization has as its symbol a cross. Of COURSE it had Christian bases at its inception. Times have changed, so if you want to say that because it started out Christian, founded by a Christian, that it must therefore still be Christian, then I have to say, simply:

    That dog won't hunt.

  • Yep, sure did.

Did you know that a good deal of my income goes to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, another charity started by a Christian (Danny Thomas)?

Did you know that I just made another donation to the Red Cross Haitian relief effort and made a blood donation appointment with the Red Cross before logging into YA tonight?

Did you know that I am not so petty that I would refuse to help those in need through worthy charities just because of the religious affiliation of the charity's founder?

    ...And?

The Red Cross, as it operates today, is a secular organization which provides secular services for people in need. I support that.

To refuse to associate with it based on the affiliation of its founder would be beyond petty.

"Do you athiests know that the founder of the Red cross was a christian?"

I know that not all xians are bad people...

It's just that they are the ones who get the headlines... Pat Robertson, et al.

    Oh, and it's atheists... a-the-ists

Why can't you people get your heads around such a simple word?

    So?

    Good for them.

Doesn't prove anything, and I don't say that the red cross isn't founded on Christian values.

Why is it so important to you people to prove that your charities are better than everyone else?

I thought pride was a sin.

Yeah and the Third Reich was founded by a Christian too. What's your point?
