How will the Mass election of a Republican impact Cap and Trade legislation in the Senate?

The Democrats now have only 59 of 100 Senate seats. The energy bill which will soon come before the Senate passed in the house by only 3 votes out of 435. To pass the house of representatives requires only a 50%+ majority. But to bring a new bill to a vote in the Senate and avoid a filibuster requires at least 60 votes. It appears that the house-passed energy bill is Dead On Arrival in the Senate, so it will not even come to the Senate floor for a vote. If "cap and trade" fails in the USA, as it most likely will, how will the rest of the world react in its efforts to slay the CO2 dragon?

It's going to be that much more difficult, but it still has a decent shot.

Lindsey Graham - a conservative Republican from South Carolina - is co-sponsoring the legislation. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins will probably vote for it. Lisa Murkowski might be another "gettable" Republican, based on statements she's made. John McCain is a close ally of Graham's, so he's also "gettable".

Brown isn't even necessarily a "no" vote. He knows he was elected in one of the most liberal states in the country by a slim margin. If he votes against the bill, he's not doing his re-election chances any favors. He's so far been a fence-sitter on the issue, basically saying we don't know if global warming is caused by humans or natural. So he probably won't vote for it, but you never know.

There will also be some Democrats to vote against it. Landrieu is from Louisiana, which depends heavily on the petroleum industry. She and Ben Nelson are likely "no" votes among the Democrats.

But if they can get say 5 Republicans on board, they can still afford to lose 4 Democrats even if Brown is a "no" vote and still get their 60.

If the bill does fail, frankly we're all screwed. Australia won't pass one either, neither will Canada, we won't be able to forge an international climate agreement, etc. It will be a disaster. I have a feeling it will get done because it's one of those things that *has* to get done, and even some Republican Senators realize it. Hopefully enough of them.

These bills are the real deal! If they pass forget free speech! Almost all talk radio, political and religious web sites would be shut down. Get mad and call your neighbor a name and do serious prison time for it! These bills are sponsored by ultra left (Make communists look conservative!) Zionist scumbag ADL! This is a hate speech as I do hate these scum! I don't know how these hate spreading scum are allowed to have so much power in our country but, no mistake, they certainly do! Not that it has anything what so ever with their being Jewish, I have no idea if they all are but I do know they are Zionists a completely different thing! Understand these bills are far more than they seem as they allow the fed to have legal jurisdiction in the several states with the states becoming subordinate in these matters. This is a very serious erosion of state sovereignty. The bureaucracy that will be created to support this is truly awesome! It will cost billions and where will the money come from? I don't have a clue. Read a lot more about it in Ted Pikes web site Sign up for his news letter so we all can fight this huge pending erosion of our most basic rights!

I find it funny that so many people are so excited about Brown winning. He won on personality, not the issues and that's really sad since I would like to think that by now people would grow up and realize that the issues are the most important factor we should take into consideration. For instance, look at what the stock market did on news of his win... I think Brown will do whatever is in the best interest of big business, and seems to be more of a stalling vote than a progressive vote and will probably serve his term being a GOP tool.

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone if he votes for Cap and Trade.

Considering that three out of the four top emitters of greenhouse gases don't want to even slow down their rate of increase in greenhouse gas emissions, by not passing a cap and trade bill in the United States we will SAVE thousands of jobs especially in the steel, aluminum, and other metal making industries. It will also give us more time to try to come up with sources of energy that the environmentalists may like. Considering so far they are against wind and solar farms that may harm the environment and take to courts almost any other energy project I am not holding my breath.

I don't think so. There are a few RINOs who are on board, and the coal-belt Democrats will shake Reid and Pelosi down for more than their share of the funds that come in from cap and tax. That's how government works.

Cap-and-trade is a conservative economic response. We know the GOP Senate will absolutely not move in lock-step as they did on health-care. Several economic conservatives are realists and understand the depth of the science and the risk of global warming. On the other hand, lightly populated states are over-represented in the Senate. Farm and rural families fear cap-and-trade most because they use more gasoline and because they are less educated than urban families. So, it will be a battle. I speculate that the bill will be re-written to whatever specifications John McCain wants and it passes. McCain will need to deliver only 4 or 5 Republicans, and there will be more like 20 GOP Senators voting in favor of the final bill. Despite the Democrat's numbers advantage, McCain is in control.

Hard to say. But it's not like some other things.

There are a number of Republicans who accept global warming as real, and mostly caused by us. John McCain and Lindsey Graham being the most prominent. The question is whether a bill can be drafted that will garner their support. I'm guessing the answer is yes, although it probably isn't exactly the one the House passed.

Cap and trade legislation would create a huge market in carbon credits for Wall Street bankers, make Al Gore a billionaire, and substantially raise energy bills for the average American. However, it would do nothing of substance in slaying "the CO2 dragon."

I've just been around too long to be fooled by idealistic sounding crud anymore.

We will see the crap and trade bill die once and for all and good riddens to this hogwash tax. It wouldn't help the people anyhow only big business. Why else would industry be for it. Because they stand to make lots of money of course.

Cap and Trade is dead. Good thing as only the bankers and the energy companies were poised to make any money on it.
