If a student has trouble reading and she's been told it's not dyslexia or ADHD, what else could it be?

Child study team said it's not ADHD or dyslexia. So now what? Who else can determine what the problem could be?

Update:

She's a preteen who wears glasses, and her prescription is still current so I don't think the problem is her eyes.

If it is not the eyesight, try to think as to how she was educated in regards to her early reading experiences. Did the school use sight words or phonics? Did she learn all the letter sounds, ahead, or just jump right into the reading part? By the way, some kids are ADD and not hyperactive and this can still distract them, but you won't, necessarily, notice it as much.

Try checking her: I know it sounds silly, but see if she knows all her letter sounds. After that, try going back to the beginning and have her relearn rhyming words: bat, cat, hat . . ./ cot, dot, hot, . . , progressively until it sinks into her memory. If she was introduced to reading through sight words, only, maybe it just didn't make sense to her. If she starts now, and relearns phonics, she should be able to do just fine. But, maybe she should also be reassessed by your physician on the other things, just in case. Find a nice phonics computer program and see how it goes.

The Child Study team didn't offer any possibilities? Were they asked?

Some children simply are not academically inclined, not for reason of any learning disability but because they don't possess the type of intelligence -- and there are many types -- best suited to picking up academic skills and achieving well in school. These students may have other abilities and talents, which should be encouraged.

However, before concluding that I had on my hands a child who was simply never destined to do particularly well in school, I would ask some pointed questions of the Child Study team: what other explanations could there be? What other tests could be performed?

It could be there eye sight. That was the problem with me. I could not learn to read at first because I was not able to see clearly what I was reading. Get there eyes checked if you have not already. If you have and there is still a problem then it could be that they are just not able to read as well as others right now. But they will most likely catch up when they get older I would think.

Yeah a trip to the options would be next I`d Guess. Also ask for a hearing test. I don`t mean can they hear but some kids have difficulty with certain pitches. Often they are tagged as day dreamers or lazy but, they just haven't heard what has been said properly.

There are a variety of other possibilities. They should be sure to check her eye sight and even hearing would effect this as well as all subjects so check that too. She could have a learning disability too and it could be emotional or otherwise.

Not ness. a disorder - just the manner the mind understands, retains and retrieves info.

If a school does not have an Individualized Education Program you may have to find a manner that works.
