just take the details of your computer to your local computer shop
and they should be able to tell you what type of RAM you need.
4gb is enough for Vista
when you buy it make sure you buy matched pairs.
ie : 2 X 2GB

RAM is hardware in your PC, a bit like a temporary hard drive
I was taught it as:
Your PC is like a bloke at a desk in an office
His Brain is the PC's Processor i.e. how clever the bloke is
His Filing cabinets are the PC's hard drives i.e. data storage
His desk size is the PC's RAM i.e. how many files out of storage can he spread on his desk at once
If you need more RAM go to:
www.crucial.com
There is a RAM checker you can run online (without downloading any programs or anything) that will match the type of RAM you can have on your PC.
Write down the type of RAM it recommends for you and then shop around for those types.
You can look up "how to install RAM" on t'internet....it's dead easy, you just plug it in.

RAM is a physical object. It would need to be installed with human hands.
It is not free.
If you do not want to be the one to have to figure out what you need to purchase, you can bring the laptop to any computer store, and have them do it for you... for a fee.
Or..
http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/index.aspx
Visit Crucial and use their system scanner. It will tell you how much Ram you have exactly (whether you have a single physical stick of 1gb of Ram, or you have two physical sticks of 512mb of Ram each), and it will tell you how much Ram you can use at a maximum, and it will recommend Ram for purchase. However, if you did purchase it, it would be shipped to you, and you would be responsible for putting it in, or finding someone to put it in for you.
Putting Ram in is not all that difficult. You flip the laptop over, and you remove the cover from your ram slots. If you had included the make and model of your laptop, I could have found you a Youtube video showing exactly how to do this... but you did not think it was important to share that information. So, you are on your own from here.
end of line

you have to purchase it, it is a hardware chip, you said that you are not technical... so first analyze your problem with someone and then makes a decision about ram or some other.
