where can i adopt a puppy/dog that wont break the bank?

my family wants to adopt a large breed puppy/dog but all the shelters want $300.00 or more. we can afford to feed and provide medical care for the puppy/dog but that up front cost is almost as much as going to a breeder. any advice would be appreciated. we r in the madison wisconsin area.

You are going to pay way more than $300 from a reputable breeder. Try looking on craigslist for a free one, but make sure to ask why it's free.

If $300 is too much to pay to get the dog from a shelter, you can't afford a dog. Even if you get it for free, its puppy vaccinations, worming and neutering are going to be that much, never mind its leash and collar and any other odds and ends a dog needs. Training class. A crate. A licence. Flea preventative. Toys. Have you looked into what medical care can really cost?. I paid almost $1000 recently to get a lump removed from my dog. I barely notice a vet bill under $300. That's a routine maintenance cost. I don't think you've checked breeder prices either. There are very few genuine purebred dogs from decent breeders that cost only a bit more than $300, especially with large breeds.

I just took my dog to the vet for her annual checkup and shots. The bill was $220.

Most shelters have to pay for more veterinary care than just shots/checkup, they often have to spay/neuter (last time I paid for that it was $190 for a cat) and sometimes treat injuries or illness which just racks up the costs even more.

$300 for a shelter dog isn't really much when you think about all the vet expenses that you are avoiding for 1yr or more (I think rabies vaccines last 3yrs now) with that up-front cost.

And reputable breeders charge in the thousands of dollars for their dogs not "almost as much" as the $300 shelter fee. I've been looking and the least expensive price I've found for a purebred puppy was $1,800. If you have found a breeder charging only a little more than $300 ... don't buy from them, it is a huge red flag that they aren't a reputable breeder.

Dogs aren't a one time expense. It's not like you can buy a dog that will be $100 up front and then just $10/month. That just isn't going to happen. Bigger dogs need more food, which makes them more expensive than smaller breeds (except for the small dogs needing excessive grooming).

    Up-front costs:

    The dog's adoption fee

Vet visit & vaccinations (dog needs to see vet within 72 hours of adoption)

MoNtHlY flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives (about $17-25; but in bulk if possible)

Food (quality brands will be more expensive, but dogs don't need to eat as much)

    Crate ($50-100)

    Bedding (probably $30+)

    Toys ($4-12 each)

    Leash (About $12)

    Collar & tags (About $5-10)

    Microchip (about $40 I think*)

    Treats ($3)

    Training ($100+)

So, upfront, you're probably looking at at least $350 the first week alone PLUS the cost of the dog. Beyond that, you're looking at about $35/month barring medical expenses.

If $3 hundred is basically too lots to pay to get the dogs from a shield, you will not be able to discover the money for a dogs. whether you get it for loose, its doggy vaccinations, worming and neutering are going to be that lots, never techniques its leash and collar and the different odds and ends a dogs desires. coaching type. A crate. A licence. Flea preventative. Toys. have you ever regarded into what scientific care can extremely fee?. I paid distinctly much $one thousand presently to get a lump faraway from my dogs. I slightly be conscious a vet invoice decrease than $3 hundred. that's a habitual maintenance fee. i don't think of you have checked breeder expenditures the two. There are basically some genuine purebred dogs from good breeders that fee purely slightly greater suitable than $3 hundred, exceedingly with super breeds.

If you can't come up with the $300 to get the dog at this time, save money until you can.

You know, it can cost up to $300 for a yearly vet appointment, depending upon the needs of the animal. By the time you add up shots, heartworm tests, flea and heartworm preventatives, plus an office visit, you may be spending at least $200, maybe more.

If you are concerned about vet charges, i'm sure you could get more information about these costs by contacting the vet of your choice.

The reason for the $300 is to cover the spay/neuter, the vaccines that the puppy needs, along with a microchip.

To spay/neuter a dog is between $250-$400, the vaccines range between $50-$90, and the microchip is $25.

If you were to purchase a puppy from a pet store, which would be from a puppy mill, it would cost at least $250, and you would have to get the Vaccinations, microchip, and the spay neuter yourself.

$300 is a STEAL for a puppy since "everything" is included.

look around at different shelters. You also have to think about what is included in the $300. It may be a better deal than you think.

here are a bunch of dogs you can see their adoption fees on their page, but you shouldnt get a dog just because of its adoption fee,you end up with incompatibilities that way, also keep in mind that you get a spayed/neutered wormed shots and in some cases obedience training, thats worth well over 300$
