Computer question Overclocker and people with more understanding please!?
I understand quite a bit about computers but i need some one verify what i am thinking right now.
Ok so here's the load out:
I have the following:
Asrock X58 Supercomputer Board
I7 920 with Corsair H50 Water Cooler
5870 ATI Sapphire 1GB Stock cooler
6048GB OCZ GOLD DDR3 1600 mhz RAM
1TB HDD Caviar Black WD Sata
850W Corsair Non modul PSU unit
HAF 922 Case with full fan setup
Here's where things get messy with my infinite stupidity in action:
I decided to do a mild overclock on my ring:
It's normally 2800Mhz 21 multiplier
With my motherboard came a tool which overclocks the bios automatically to certain values
so i just set it on 3.6 considering i have the H50 i should have been fine i boot up all good all good went in 3D mark vintage started to do a benchmark and in the middle of the test....PC shuts down
Now smoke no sound just like i've pressed the button on the thing what i do next is i freaked out<----
Opened it up shorted the bios jumper to reset it took the battery out like 4 times waited for it overnight nothing nothing nothing
I unpluged the videocard and than turned on Powersupply it came to live for a split second lighting all fans and hearing a short beep bios code now i checked it out it said either one of two things:
1 Your PC"s RUNING (obviously it isn't)
2 Your motherboard died a horrible screaming death
So what i did next is i consulted with bunch of people i know and to make a long story short i took the whole rig apart resaults::
CPU-Backside frontside no damage no burned marks nothing visible no smell
RAM-Front backside No visible damage or burned marks nor smoke nor smell
Videocard-No visible burned mark smoke or smell
PSU-Works perfect 3.3,12,5,5Volt with a PSU tester
Motherboard-on a close look No damage visible all seems in order
Now since i am in this from many years what i think is the following:
CPU overheated but not before the motherboard did so which automatically fried it's chip set causing it not to boot luckly for me however it having a fried chip set would not void the RMA nor would it damage other components.Untill now i am willing to bet that either Motherboard or CPU are Fault since i see no damage to the CPu what so ever nor the heatsink i am willing to bet on the motherboard so i am having it send back in hopes of getting new one.Fortunately for me it isn;'t exactly a UBER UBER MOTHERBOARD so it should be replaced because it would cost them more to dig deeper in what was the cause it will pass visual check since i checked it my self nothing is missing no pins no jumpers no capacitors nothing leaking so i should be in a clear.Share you opinion please best answer as always 10points.
Thing is that i've found a dude with an ASrock x58 Extreme one version undermine which had the same exact problem and it was only motherboard fried up no other components were taken with it the fact that the PSU is alive gives me hope everything else is fine except the board ;p

There's a chance that the ICH10 chip or the X58 IOH chip got damaged.
May I suggest that next time you consider overclocking in much smaller increments?
