Why is a SMART car called a SMART car?
Is it because of its good petrol consumption, its safety or because it stands for "Swatch Mercedes Art"?
Thanks!
Could you guys please not just outright guess? Only answer if you KNOW please!

The name Smart is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART. Swatch (yes the watch company) is the originator of the Smart car idea. It was original supposed to be built by Volkswagen but that did not wok out, and so Mercedes ended up with the contract to build the Smart. As to the size, the idea behind the car was to create a vehicle easy to park and short enough to allow "nose-in" parking. Its length of 250 centimeters would equal the width of a regular parking slot, allowing two or three Smarts to park in the same space as one normal car.

It was supposed to be called the SMART with regards to its incredibly small size which makes it easy to parralel park, although this of course does not apply to the Roadster which was actually relatively normal and...umm...sane...

Safety? Hah! If it gets hit by a bicycle it's in trouble. I think it stands for Some Men Are ReTarded
