Question about X-Men Origins: Wolverine?
Well, I just watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine with my husband, a total comic book nerd and he didn't like the movie. For reasons he said "would take all night to tell you, and you wouldn't want to watch it again"
Anywho.. I've got a question about it, like... I know Wolverine's name is James Howlett and the reason he calls himself "Wolverine" but where does the name Logan come in? About 1/3 of the way into the movie (after leaving the "group" ) people start randomly calling him Logan? In the 6 years out of the film did he just one day say to himself "I don't like the name James, call me Logan" Is there a reason behind it?

In the comics, James (who ran off with a girl childhood friend and NOT the future Sabretooth) had to change his name because he was hiding from his family, Creed's family, and/or the law. He chose "Logan" after the foreman at the lumber camp where he worked, a man he respected.
Now, after this point it gets fuzzy because writers came and went for years and each one had to rewrite Wolverine's mysterious past in some way. But the gist of it is that by the time of the Weapon X project that gave him his metal skeleton and claws, he was only going by the name Logan. The trauma of the metal infusion and the torture and conditioning he was subjected to later caused his memory loss, and over the years as he recovered, first with the Canadian super-team Alpha Flight and later with the X-Men, he didn't even remember how he got the metal, or any of the events that came before.
In the movie - which, at two hours, could never cover the complexity of a print story that's been going on continuously for almost forty years - I can only assume Howlett changed names in a futile attempt to put his past behind him. The movie makers were probably aware that most fans would gripe about a Wolverine that wasn't called Logan by his friends.
As a casual comic reader myself, I wasn't nearly bothered by that detail as I was by the fact that the girlfriend, the Native American Silver Fox, had always been a plant...and was the sister of Emma "White Queen" Frost, to boot.

Logan was the name of his father (that he killed at the beginning: Thomas Logan).
The Wolverine Origins comic explained all his early life in detail, however they just threw in that one scene when he was a kid at the beginning and made up the rest :p
His real father was a drunk who worked as a groundskeeper for the Howletts. He had a son (therefore, Logan's half brother), that went by the nickname of 'Dog'. In the movie, he's replaced by Sabertooth.
When he went to work at some mines, he didn't want to reveal his real name (his family was fairly well known) so he used Logan instead.
I totally understand why your husband didn't like the movie. It really doesn't follow the comics very well. Most people's major issue is with the character Deadpool, who is amazing in the comic books, but really different in the movie. They basically just gave that guy the name Deadpool, since he's not like the actual character at all.

X-Men First Class, a movie about the young x-men, is scheduled for next year. X-Men Origins: Magneto due to be released in 2011. They are working on Origins: Wolverine 2. Strong possibility of a Deadpool. Possible Emma Frost movie, and Gambit Movie.

I'm not entirely sure where Logan came from, Maybe he just likes it. As for ditching "James Howlett", I think he was trying to shed ties to his past and his father, so picked up a different name. Just a guess though.
