Firstly, go to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced, and ensure that "When I press the sleep button on my computer" is set to Stand-by.

If that's ok, then yeah, standby is a PCU control option, so it'll more than likely be provided by some drivers. You should look for your setup disks to see if there's a driver disk or something, failing that, try looking online. Most vendors distribute their drivers for free online ;)

Also, for Hibernate, you may wish to go to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Hibernate -> Enable Hibernation

I actual have a dell too. besides to be waiting to alter what happens once you shut the pc, you could completly swap video demonstrate contraptions. pass to start>administration Panel>(on the left click swap to classic view, if in spite of the undeniable fact that it says swap to classification view, do not something)>skill thoughts>progressed(tab)>substitute once I close transportable lid to do not something. you additionally can swap video demonstrate contraptions complelty. I actual have a dell inspiron 4100 pc on XP and use an exterior visual demonstrate unit and locate that this works extra effective. In contorl panel, click demonstrate>settings(tab)>progressed>demonstrate(t... the 2d visual demonstrate unit to commonly used(circle rather of two boxes>turn off the pc demonstrate Now, each time you activate the pc each and each time it is going to purely use the 2d demonstrate, that's far less complicated and swifter
