How to build my credit?

I don't know why my credit is "bad", and I'm such a newb to the whole thing, that I'm baffled as to how I should build it back up? I applied for a credit card and they rejected me. My husband and I want to build our credit so we can eventually buy a house. I suspect maybe my credit isn't good because I think I have a library fine from where I used to live. It was really small though, like $20.

Could my school loans affect my credit? We're paying them on time.

So I guess my question is, how can I build my credit if I can't get a credit card?

All credit repair business are in it to make money, they could care less about you and your credit. There is only one way to clean up your credit and that is it works more to earn more money and spend less money so that you can pay off your debt. So earn more, spend less. Very simple, stays clear of those companies and take responsibility for your self.

Hm.. weird I highly doubt if the library fine would effect your credit that bad.. or even be on your credit! If you have school loans and you are paying them on time then that should be helping your credit.. Don't go applying at a million credit card companies because each time someone pulls your credit report it effects your credit negatively.. You could search credit cards that will approve you according to your credit score even if you only activate it and then cut it up (the smartest thing to do) it will help your credit.. also if you or hubby do get approved for a credit card put each others names on it so it will be on both of your credit and help with both of you. Another option is to pull up your credit report and see what exactly is on it there might be some things on there that don't belong on there then you can dispute them. Other then that I really don't know why your credit would be bad.. but I don't really know any other way to build your credit besides getting a card or loans.. Good luck!

First, a rejection does not mean that your credit is bad. It could simply mean that it is not good enough.

Start by taking some money to a bank that offers "secured" credit cards to depositors without good credit. Deposit the money and start using the secured credit card to build your credit.

Open up a bank account and ask for a SECURED credit card.
