About an anti-anxiety pill (celexa) I need advice?

I'm about to start taking the Celxa pills, and I read on the bottle that I should be consistent with consuming the pills. I should take one every night. What happens if I take a celexa pill everytime I feel an anxiety attack coming on?

Cause I personally don't want to take a pill everyday. and get hooked ..

What should I do?

& whats your experience with celexa or anti-anxiety pill?

Thank you

Update:

Thank you or your info Emily.. I will be talking to my doctor soon =)

I used to be on this! Its an ANTI DEPRESSENT that they perscribe for people suffering from anxiet. You MUST take it every day for it to be effective. I really liked celexa. I'm off it now, but it is DEFINITELY not something you can just STOP taking. its actually extrememly dangerous to do so.. Stopping this medication can cause withdrawls and you can suffer from panic attacks and from seizures *I don't think i spelled that right* and can go into a coma too. My friend stopped taking hers and she was rushed to the ER :( Be very careful to take it everyday!!!

If you want to take something just when u feel the anxiety, it would have to be something like atavan, valium, xanax, prozac.. etc. Those take it away AFTER it happens.. Celexa is a mood stabelizer that PREVENTS it before it happens.. and one u have to take everyday for it to work. Give it 2 weeks to notice full results, because it takes a while to get fully regulated in your system.

I am bi-polar and have taken Celexa before, It is mainly used for depression, but has some

anxiety/panic disorder uses. Do not take more than prescribed. This is not a nerve pill to be

taken just when you feel nervous or anxious. I looked it up and it takes about seven days to get into your system. Some meds of this kind, side effects are nervousness. Do not worry about getting hooked on this and do not stop taking all at once. Your Dr. should monitor you closely. This med.can be taken over a long period of time. Try to use calming methods when you feel anxiety coming on, deep breathing slow, deep and release slowly so you do not hyperventilate. Remove yourself from the situation that is causing anxiety if you can. Go for a walk or drive if you can. If you are having a full blown anxiety attack, this is easier said that done. Go to your safe place, home, bed, but do not stay in bed all the time as this is not good. Anxiety does not have to be caused by a certain situation, it can come on at any time. Just follow med. instructions and see Dr. regularly and be completely honest when you talk to him and don't think any question you have is too stupid. He is a trained professional. Hope this helps. Been there, done that.

Celexa is in a class of drugs called SSRI's. This is an antidepressant not really what someone would classify and anti anxiety pill. It can take up to 4 weeks to feel the full effect of a SSRI and you should take it as prescribed. The medicine will work better if you take it at the same time every day and do not miss any doses. Do not double your dose if you forget to take it one day however. You would not be doing anything by taking the pill every time you feel an anxiety attack coming on because this type of medication works over a long period of time rather than short term. If you take the medication for a few weeks and notice that you are still having anxiety attacks talk with your doctor about taking a Benzodiazepine such as Klonopin or Xanax. SSRI's are not habit forming but Benzos most certainly are so use those with extreme caution and take only as directed to avoid them being habit forming.

Celexa is not an ant-anxiety medication. It is an antidepressant that may be used to treat people who are depressed and also experiencing anxiety. You must take Celexa every day. If you don't, you will most likely suffer from withdrawal, called "discontinuation syndrome" by the pharmaceutical companies.

If you want a medication to take "prn" (as needed), for anxiety, you need to talk to your doctor about putting you on something different. The most popular anti-anxiety meds are "benzodiazapines", such as Xanax, Activan, Valium, etc. There are some non-narcotic choices, which are not habit forming, such as buspar or Visteral.

im on the generic version of celexa. you have to take one everyday, at about the same time of day, or they wont work. they also wont work for about the first four to six weeks that you take them. most medications come with side affects, but they are different for everyone. for me, when i first started taking them, i slept better, but felt sick to my stomach the first few days. you cannot just take one when you feel an anxiety attack coming on. they dont work like that. they prevent panic attacks by leveling out the chemicals in your brain. alot of doctors will not prescribe benzos (fast acting pills for treating panic attacks when they happen) until you have tried SSRIs like celexa. i would reccomend that you try the celexa and give it a couple of months to make up your mind. then if it doesnt work, try a different SSRI. benzos are addictive, so if you do try xanax or something similiar, be careful.

I was on Celexa for 6 weeks last summer. When you first start taking it you get really dizzy and sleep alot and are in a good mood, you will also lose some weight. After about 10 days the dizziness and sleepiness subsided I felt like I was constantly stoned, my insomnia got worse and my sex drive went away completely. When I did try and have sex the orgasm would never come. After being on it for 4 weeks I started to feel like I had electricity going through my heart and left arm. I kept waiting for the no sex drive side effect to go away but after 6 weeks it just got worse, my insomnia was worse and the electricity going through my heart and arm was worse. I was still in a good mood though, my husband lost his job and I was unemployed and it didn't bother me at all. However I could not handle the way my heart, arm and sex drive was so I finally went on the internet and read a lot of user reviews and learned that people had been taking this drug for years and still had no sex drive. That was it for me, I stopped cold turkey and it took about 2 weeks for it to get out of my system. Being on it for the six weeks did help my PMDD, which I have not had since, though it didn't help my panic attacks, I still had to take Xanax for those. Now I just take Xanax for the panic attacks. However doctors don't like to prescribe this for long periods of time so I don't know what I will be taking in the near future. I would seriously reconsider taking Celexa if you can, however it depends on why your doctor felt it was necessary for you to take in the first place. You need to judge for yourself if you can handle it or not once you start taking it and you should call your doctors office to really answer your question. I would think you need to take it daily for it to really have affect. Good luck.

You would be better off getting therapy to deal with your panic attacks than taking a pill. You will have to take pills for the rest of your life -t hey do not cure the anxiety, they only treat it. Well, if you plan to ever get intimately involved with someone, you can forget about antidepressants - you can't have sex while you are taking them. Your body will not perform. In the end, you will deprive yourself of a healthy sex life, or get fed up and stop taking these pills, which is what most people do, and the anxiety will come right back again. Why not do yourself a favor and get therapy instead? Even psychiatrists prefer it if people learn to deal with their anxiety instead of take a pill for it, because when you learn to deal with your anxiety, it is actually cured, with no side effects and no risk. But people don't want to bother with therapy, so the docs just hand out the pills reflexively and don't bother mentioning it anymore. . .

get some self-help books on anxiety, and also google anxiety disorders, and see a cognitive behavioral therapist. Breathing in your abdomen instead of your chest - very important, learn meditation (I like guided imagery), learn to stop "catostrophizing" an anxiety provoking thought pattern where you always assume the worst.

no dont do that. you have to take it everyday. it gets the ceretonin in your brain back where it needs to be. if you need something for anxiety attacks talk to your doctor about a pill such as kolonopin. it works in the nervous system for a calming effect. other wise you wont feel anything from taking one pill of the celexa because it wont work if you dont take it daily.

Source(s): i was on this medicine and im on kolonopin and ive been taking other depression and anxiety medicines.
