Are the older Breyer horses made with stronger material than the newer ones?
I remember in the 70's playing out in the yard and dirt with my old breyer horses. We were so rough on them and they never seemed to break legs. The ones I've bought my girls in the last five years seem so much more brittle. Always having broken legs! Does anyone know if they have changed the way they made them? I want to get more of a collection going but not put money into ones that are going to break the first week!
I know this is in the real horse category but I know many of us all started out with Bryers until we got our "real horses" lol

For decades Breyer horses were manufactured and painted in the USA, but sadly are now made in China. I am a long-time collector and have definitely noticed the change. The plastic is more brittle, the paint jobs are not as nice, and the models don't even have that solid feel when you hold them in your hands. Much the same as everything else that's been outsourced to China, the quality has suffered. I stopped collecting but if they ever bring the manufacturing back to the US I'm there!
I think the outsourcing started around 2000 or so. If you save your boxes, it should state on there where they are from.

I collected Breyers when I was a kid, then started collecting real horses... and my Breyer collection is larger than ever! LOL!
I haven't had your experience. When my kids were little, I let them use my childhood Breyers (which had never broken on me) and they broke them all up, loved them to death. The newer Breyers I have seem just as sturdy; I've dropped several and not had a problem.
I think it has more to do with kids expecting things to be kid proof now, more than kids did in the 70s. We were more careful, cuz EVERYTHING broke easily.

Maybe you were just a careful child? I too used to play out in the yard with the old breyers and mine all had at least one broken leg plus broken ears, etc. : ) I did try and pretend to ride mine though! None of my new ones have broken anything but of course I'm a bit more gentle...

I noticed that too. When I was little my mom gave me her old breyers (some are worth over $100 now!) And even when I dropped them they wouldn't even dent. But I got the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girl horse and rider and within two weeks the tail, ear, and one of the legs had broken off. I guess everyone is getting cheaper these days!

I collected Breyers. I don't know for sure but I think your right. The older ones I got, I would play with them all the time and they never broke. I was putting a newer one on a shelf, accidentally dropped it and the leg broke off it!
