Basic math HELP! Confused?

Hi all,

I need some help regarding a basic math problem, but I am confused on how to finish it.

A tile is 6in. x 6in., and the lobby is 80ft. x 40ft.

If a worker can lay 50 tiles per hour, and if there are three workers and assuming 8-hour work day, how many days will it take to lay tiles to cover the lobby?

So the first thing I did was convert 80ft. x 40ft. into 960in. x 480in. and the figured out the square area, which is 460800 sq. in.

The tile square area is 36 sq. in.

So the total tiles required is 460800/36 = 12,800 tiles.

Now, I did 12800 tiles/50 tiles per worker to figure out 256 hours if there was only one worker.

But how do I go from there if there were 3 workers working 8 hour days?

Please help!!!

Abe

Update:

See, I got confused between the two methods listed below! One yields about 3.5 days, other gets about 11 days!

Which one is the right way to go??

Update 2:

Nevermind! Got it! Thank you all soo much!

Update 3:

I am confused, did I calculate number of tiles right????

if one worker can lay 50 tiles per hour, how many tiles do you think 2 worker can lay ? 100 i think

    dont you think so ?

how many can 3 workers lay per hour ? 150 i think which is 3 * work done by one worker

thats why we have 3 workers

    simple , isnt it ?

so one worker in one hour is 50 tiles

    3 workers in one hour is 3 * 50 = 150 tiles

    3 workers in 8 hours or 1 day is 150 * 8 = 1200 tiles

no of tiles as per your calculation is 12,800

so number of days is 12 800 /1200 which is 10 and two thirds of a day

    all the best

As you're saying, you have 12,800 tiles are required to be laid As you have 3 workers laying 50 tiles in step with hour for 8 hours an afternoon 3 x 50 x 8 = a million,2 hundred tiles laid in step with day subsequently 12,800 / a million,2 hundred 10.66667 or 10 Days, 5hours, 20 minutes

1 worker can lay 50 tiles per hour

3 workers can lay 150 tiles per hour = 8*150=1200 tile per day

    so 12,800/1200=10 2/3 days.

You have 3 workers working 8 hour days, meaning the total work done in a day is 24 hours worth (3x8).

Then you would divide 256 by 24 and get 10.666667, which means that it will take 11 days.

Assuming each worker does the same amount of work that would be 150 tiles laid per hour * 8 hours per day = 1200 tiles laid each work day.

12800 tiles / 1200 tiles per workday = 10.667 days They would be done on the afternoon of the 11th day.

Hey devide 12800 tiles by 150 tiles per hour for 3 workers

    50 x 8 =400 per worker

    400x3=1200 each 8 hours

    12800 / 1200 = 10.66667 days =)

You were almost there. One worker can do it in 256 hours, so 3 workers can do it in 1/3rd the time:

    time for 3 workers = 256/3 = 85.33 hours

Now convert this into days (i.e. 8 hour chunks):

    number of days for 3 workers = 85.33/24 = 3.555 days. A little over 3 and a half days.

    6in x 6in = 1/4 sq ft

    50 tiles x 1/4 = 12.5 sq ft per hr per man

    12.5 sq ft x 3 men = 37.5 sq ft per hr

37.5 sq ft x 8 hrs = 300 sq ft total per day

    80 ft x 40 ft = 3200 sq ft

    3200 sq ft / 300 sq ft = 10.67 days
