R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 7)?

This is still a thing?

The First Annual Rock & Pop Best Song Competition (2009 Edition) continues. Sorry for the delay... real life, sometimes it gets you down.

To reiterate, since it's been a while, you, the community here at Yahoo! Answers, nominated 350+ songs, your favorites of the year, to face-off in head-to-head battles, tournament style, to determine the best songs of this calendar year.

I ask that you listen to all of the songs... don't vote on name alone. Listen to them, weigh them, and then choose with reason, which song is the better of the two in the given match ups. Star it, and try to get as many voters to this thing as you can.

MATCH UP 1

"Wheels" by the Foo Fighters

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_WH5Kfaj5Y

From their Greatest Hits -- the drummer from Nirvana has sold more albums than Kurt Cobain

VERSUS

"Over It" by Dinosaur Jr.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgTJtdn6VjM

Dinosaur Jr. skateboards just like you.... they're still relevant, kids!

MATCH UP 2

"Waking Up in Vegas" by Katy Perry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-pUaogoX5o

Was this song in the Hangover?

VERSUS

"So Fine" by Sean Paul

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PQgYpnhDIw

Fun Fact: Sean Paul's voice may cause grand mal seizures.

Fun Fact 2: The DVD is named after its inventor: Dick Van Dyke

one of these is true!

MATCH UP 3

"1901" by Phoenix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4MXFOMpVIw

Indie bands in car commercials

VERSUS

"Feel.Love.Thinking.Of" by Faunts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_SJXtaTmBc

Indie bands in video games

MATCH UP 4

"Get Your Back Off the Wall" by Family Force 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSbi25RQMKA

This video has the lyrics for your home karaoke party

VERSUS

"Old Souls" by The Life and Times

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX9JocTaefE

Total c*ckblock, Mars

MATCH UP 5

"One Time" by Justin Bieber

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHVhwcOg6y8

I'm still wading in Bieber songs

VERSUS

"Craigslist" by "Weird" Al Yankovic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4sALru9IJk

A joke versus a joke

If you have any trouble with any links, or any of them are broken -- let me know, and I'll fix them ASAP. Thanks.

So, THE QUESTION: which songs are the better of each these match ups (even if it's only the lesser of two evils in your eyes)?

Oh thank goodness, I got back stateside yesterday and it's like 4 in the morning and I'm wide awake. So I'm sitting here eating homemade ziti (sooo good), drinking a strawberry-banana smoothie (off the hook baby!) and yay, something to do, glad this is back!

1: Boring Foo Fighters song about wheels. Plus I've always though of wheels being down as a good thing. You're either landing somewhere to have new adventures and exciting times or else you're returning home.

    Over It.

2: I thought this was a poor Katy Perry single. Hot And Cold and I Kissed A Girl were great, this was not. I secretly like Sean Paul especially the Dutty Rock album, come on that was a damn danceable album. I also like the dance hall style.

    So Fine.

3: I like the synth in 1901 to start off, I don't like the singer. Now the other song had synth and a slightly better singer, I like the ethereal quality to his voice.

    Feel.Love.Thinking.Of.

4: What the hell is this song? It's like a rock version of Lil' Jon. Oh no I heard a guy scream. Nice rhythm though, drunk in a club this song would be awesome. This other song is slow and sad sounding in the way that I like. I would look up the lyrics to confirm said sadness, but I'm lazy.

    Old Souls.

5: You said if I listened to one Justin Bieber song I was exempt from all others. I'm exercising that option here. Ha, it's Soul Kitchen!

    Craigslist.

    Foo Fighters vs. Dinosaur Jr.

"Wheels" just doesn't seem particularly notable, to me, in either a good or a bad way. Not much pulling me in here, but not much to complain about. I guess I just like "Over It" a little more.

    Katy Perry vs. Sean Paul

"Waking Up in Vegas" is just another pop song, whereas "So Fine" is an obnoxious pop song. I'll go for "Waking Up in Vegas".

    Phoenix vs. Faunts

"1901" Has some pretty good moments, and also some fairly mediocre "indie rock" moments. Nothing too special, in my book, but still one of the better songs so far in this part. From the beginning of "Feel.Love.Thinking.Of.", I already really like the subdued, more atmospheric approach. Actually a very nice song, plus the video was quite interesting. I'll go with that.

Family Force 5 vs. The Life and Times

"Get Your Back Off the Wall" is just plain offensive. Oh, and throw in some very silly pictures of the band in ridiculous outfits. The Life and Times is a band I've been meaning to check out since Aaron Epley's guest spot in the new Pelican album, and I can tell within 10 seconds of starting the song that it will probably win this match-up. "Old Souls" is a nice little song, and I liked the video for this one, too.

Justin Bieber vs. "Weird Al" Yankovic

I can't help but feeling like I've heard this Bieber song before... I'll take "Craigslist"

Wheels - Foo Fighters Vs. Over It - Dinosaur Jr: Over It

The Foos song is alright, although definitely not one of their best. Over It, on the other hand, is just an awesome song so Dinosaur Jr wins.

Waking Up In Vegas - Katy Perry Vs. So Fine - Sean Paul: Waking Up In Vegas

I don't like either song but I can't stand Sean Pauls voice so Katy Perry easily wins

    1901 - Phoenix Vs. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of - Faunts: 1901

1901 is a fairly straightforward but enjoyable song nonetheless. Feel.Love.Thinking.Of is an ok song but I don't find it that interesting to be honest. Phoenix wins.

Get Your Back Off The Wall - Family Force 5 Vs. Old Souls - The Life And Times: Old Souls

The first track was just terrible, to be honest. I liked Old Souls although I don't think the vocals were the greatest. Old Souls wins by an absolute landslide though.

One Time - Justin Bieber Vs. Craigslist - Weird Al Yankovic: Craigslist

    Craigslist wins without question.

    "Over It" by Dinosaur Jr.

It's not my favorite track on Farm but it is a thoroughly enjoyable Dinosaur Jr. song and is infinitely better than that Fooness. I'll admit, right here, right now, that I like "Everlong" and if "My Hero" imposes itself into the background of my life through the car radio or a store PA system then I'll quietly sing along but that is the extent of my Foo love. The only reason I continue to acknowledge their existence is because I enjoy molesting Taylor Hawkins with my eyes. I did listen to "Wheels." I wouldn't vote on name alone. Dave is capable of creating a gem but this song was bad even by Foo Fighter standards. It sounded like something Toby Keith or some other pop-country abomination would sing.

"Waking Up in Vegas" by Katy Perry

I hate them both. Bright side....one will definitely be eliminated. I picked Katy because the utter blandness of her song, opposed to the jarring abruptness and whine of seizure boy's song, made it easier for me to zone out while listening thus creating a mental buffer which decreased my exposure to it and the possibility of brain damage. Plus, I got to see her eat garbage off a discarded tray like a stray dog.

    "1901" by Phoenix

Indie bands gotta eat too; I don't begrudge them decent money since making music is their job. The Faunts song was ho-hum for me. I liked "1901" but didn't love it. I feel that way about Phoenix in general. I think they're a good band but a little cutesy sounding for me to take seriously enough or respect enough to love...kind of how I feel about The Sounds and Metric.

"Old Souls" by The Life and Times

While watching that Family Force 5 clip I kept wondering which band member would be which color Power Ranger. They seem like a record company constructed group. Vin Diesel needs to make another crappy action movie so they have fight scene choreography to accompany their crappy song.

    "Craigslist" by "Weird" Al Yankovic

I'm grounding "JB" until he's 18. That means no phone, no TV, no Internet, no Auto-Tune and no silly string. Usher is supposed to be the responsible adult. He should know better than to encourage this.

Dinosaur Jr. I haven't liked an entire Foo Fighters album in quite some time, and that still holds true for their most recent.

Katy Perry. Oh my word, this one was tough. But since Sean Paul rendered me unconscious for a few minutes, I had to go with the other.

Phoenix. I picked the one that was slightly less boring.

The Life and Times. I went into this one prepared to give the competition a fair shake. I nominate them with a very clear conscience. (and thanks for finding a link to the album cut. :)

Weird Al. 9 times out of 10, I go with the intentionally funny. Disappointed to hear that we'll being seeing (and hearing) more Justin, though.

    Wheels vs. Over It

Though I do like Foo Fighters more than Dinosaur Jr., Wheels just doesn't do it for me. Dinosaur Jr. wine this one.

    "Over It"

Waking Up In Vegas vs. So Fine

    "Waking Up In Vegas"

    1901 vs. Feels.Love.Thinking.Of

"1901" Nothing too special, but it's the better song

Get Your Back Off the Wall vs. Old Souls

    "Old Souls" hands down

    One Time vs. Craiglist

    "Craiglist", you know why
