My assessment has dropped about $60,000 - when I appeal the bill - what do I need to bring with me, how do I get it changed?? Thanks.

Tax bills are based upon the assessment - if your tax assessment has changed, when they do the new tax bills, your tax bill will change to reflect the new assessment. If you think the assessment itself is too high, dig out the paper that they sent you showing the new assessment - there will be a section there on how to dispute the assessment.
However, do not mix up a tax assessment with a real estate appraisal - they are two different things. Many jurisdictions allow you to only dispute an assessment within the first 90 days after the assessment is issued. So, just because an appraisal drops does not mean you can appeal an assessment if it is outside teh time frame. You would have to wait until the next regularly scheduled assessment.

You assessment dropped and your still not satisfied? If you want to contest your assessment you can get the forms at your property appraisers office. There is usually a time limit. You will need to show sales of comparable properties. The appraiser's assessment is of a date certain, usually as of January 1st of each year. So your comparable sales must be around the same time. If there have been later sales then your assessment will be adjusted next year.

You basically need to do an property appraisal to have a good chance. You can do this yourself if you have the information on how to do it. Go to my website where you'll find a report I wrote on doing your own appraisal. I'm an ex-appraiser so it should help you a lot. Do it step by step and it's not that difficult to do a good enough job that you can convince the assessor to lower your tax bill.
