Sanded grout is used to fill large gaps. Usually 3/16" to 3/4". Non-sanded grout is used to fill very small spaces between tiles, an 1/8" or less. Many newer showers have very tight fitting tiles or even patterns that fit very close together. The non-sanded grout fills small gaps evenly much better since it doesn't have the larger sand grains in it. The people who sell you the tiles should recommend which grout to use with those tiles. If your doing a repair, you can see the sand in sanded grout and non sanded grout looks more like caulk.

    Sanded Grout

William B is basically correct. The main difference in look is that sanded grout looks and feels gritty. I learned the hard way not to use sanded grout where the tiles are close together. It will crack and come out. Always use non-sanded grout if the tiles are close together. If you are in doubt about it, play it safe and use the non-sanded grout.

Not only joint width but both the depth of the tile and the body make up of the tile determines the use of sanded or non sanded grout. It has to do with water absorption but I don t want to get into technical details. Most mosaics require a sanded grout . But w/o knowing what you have and seeing it I can t say 100%. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

Unsanded grout is usually used if you have if you have very narrow grout lines such as for a 4 inch wall tile. Sanded grout is usually used for wider grout lines and for most floor tile. God Bless
