how to stock 40 gallon community tank?

I have quite a bit of experience with african cichlids and not so much with community fish tanks. I am starting out with a 40 gallon "breeder tank" which I am going to plant with live plants to cover about 1/3 of the aquarium.

I will definately get a pleco and possibly some catfish or loaches of some sort, but I am not sure what other fish I would like. I want colorful lively fish that will be fun to watch. I would like atleast 3 different types of fish (besides the pleco)

Update:

I know plecos can get quite large. In the past I have bought small ones and then moved them to a larger tank or sold them back to a fish store when they got too big. I will consider looking for a smaller type of pleco though depending on what is available.

I am not necessarily ploanning on breeding any fish. I got a breeder tank because feel the larger surface area is more healthy for the fish.

If you already have the bottom feeders. I would get a school of fish and some top fish like gourami. What fish are you planning on breeding? PS. Common plecos might get too big for your tank, but considering how common plecos are placed into tiny tanks, 40 should be fine but consider smaller pleco species.

Well first, I would highly reconsider getting a common pleco. They can get over a foot long.. I even saw one that was almost at the 2 foot mark! And, once they get older and larger they do very little for algae cleanup. They usually end up prefering algae wafers and fish food over algae, and have a large bioload to further dirty your tank.

If you want a pleco, I would suggest a smaller species like the bristlenose (which is extremly unique looking) or the bulldog pleco.

If you go with loaches I would suggest the kuhli loach. Most loaches like to be kept in groups, but also, most loaches will get to big (especially a group of them) for your tank. The kuhli loaches get around 4 inches, and like groups of 3-4+.

As far as catfish go, I've always been partial to the corydoras. They are small schooling fish, and are rather cute.

    As for the rest..

A school of at least 6 neon tetra is always a colorful addition. You could also do a school of harlequin rasbora. They aren't as colorful as the tetra, but aren't known to be as nippy either.

I have a trio of dalmation mollies. I love them, and find the black/white coloring to be beautiful. Maybe they are for you, maybe not. Mollies, platies, and guppies all come in a wide range of colors though.

If you did some research and found proper tank mates you could even have a trio or more of female betta...

The rest is up to you and the amount of research you want to do.

I would go with smaller Pleco species, like Bristlenose.

Then for your "centre peices" I would choose 2 Small Rams, like Bolivian or German Blue.

For schoolers I'd choose Guppies, or Tetras or Mollies.

You could breed the rams - they make great parents.

Or the Guppies and/or Mollies, but their parenting skills arent that great.

    Good Luck!
