Check out the links below, the 1st being a search done for lense that will work with Sony including not only Sony lenses but also the respected independent lens maker lenses like, Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina.

    Hope this helps.

I would NOT recommend the lens the Amazon spam bot posted... simply because it costs almost $100 more than the Tamron 18-200, and it is the *same lens*. This also applies to the Sony and Tamron 18-250 lenses, they are the same lens with different names on them.

Your camera came with the 18-70 DT? Rather mediocre lens, but not completely useless. It is my understanding that the new Sony 18-55 is a very good performer in image quality, if not in build quality. $200 to find out. Or the new 50mm f/1.8 DT for $150, if you don't have a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 already. There is the new 35mm macro as well, another $200.

I like the Minolta Maxxum lenses... I almost never take my 24-105 (D) f/3.5-4.5 off the camera.

Since your A300 uses the Minolta Maxxum "A" mount first introduced in 1985 that means you have access to all that legacy Maxxum AF glass. One of the best zoom lenses made for the Maxxum was the 70-210mm f4, affectionately known as the "beer can". I have the older manual focus model and if anything happened to it I'd be quickly searching for a replacement. I've seen the AF version on eBay for around $100.00 but as you know you have to be careful buying on eBay. Here are some trusted on-line sellers that deal in used equipment:

While you're searching for the 70-210 you may as well look for a Maxxum AF 50mm f1.4. Great in low-light and makes an acceptable portrait lens on your A300.

Well depends on your budget I spend about $400 on a Tamron SP AF Xi LD blah blah blah 28-75mm F2,8 lens.

A zoomlens by Tamron that is offering a width F2,8 over the full range. With a shitload of LD/ED and Athmospherical glass to ensure that the light falls straight on the sensor.

It is a beauty the images it makes are wow! Money well spend.
