Jackson was near great. Before him presidential campaigns were gentile. Jackson was a brutal campaigner who accused John Quincy Adams of all the 7 deadly sins, and a few more beside. Jackson was the man who put D in Democrat. To this day they have Jefferson-Jackson dinners. He made the Democrats the peoples party.
Major events were the Nullification affair, were some states claimed they had the right to selectively nullify laws (tariffs) they did not like. Jackson fought this, and at one time threatened to hang some of the leaders.
The petticoat affair.
The bank of the United states. In 1816, one bank was chartered to be the central bank. Jackson opposed this quasi government institution because it favored the eastern merchants over the farmers. Jackson refused to renew the charter, and pulled the government's money out, closing the bank. Jackson at first deposited the government's money in state banks, which caused wild speculation and inflation because no one was controlling the money supply. When Jackson demanded gold or silver money for land, it caused a panic and a major depression.
The most controversial thing Jackson did was the forced removal of the peace full indian tribes (Cherokee). When the Cherokees won their case at the Supreme court, Jackson ignored it and forced the indians west at bayonet point. Jackson remarked John Marshall (Chief Justice) does not have an army.

great
he really grabbed the reins of the executive branch of government and pushed it to the limit so that the legislative branch wouldnt get whatever they wanted. For example, his rotation of office and spoils systems really allowed for an efficient, productive government. Also I have to say he was a good president because he kept the nullification crisis in 1832 from turning into the Civil War, 30 years before the actual Civil War
