Is Fidel Castro an American?

Now, it may appear to be a strange question, but please believe that there is actually a reason for it. Thank you in advance for your responses.

Update:

Thanks much for the quick responses. The reason I asked is that I was having a discussion with someone about 'America' and 'American'. He contended that anyone from North or South America is American, and that those continents together are America. My contention was that America is a country, while North and South America are continents and the Americas refer to them collectively.

So, I got responses from people in various other countries......all of which said they are not Americans.

All we were lacking were responses from some other people from the USA. So, I asked the question in various ways in a couple of different places.

The results? Within the USA, there were a handful that called this entire hemisphere America, and everyone living there Americans. In other parts of this hemisphere, not a single person said that they were Americans or lived in America.

Thanks again for the responses.

Well it depends on the perspective.

If you take "American" to mean US Citizen, then no.

If you mean "American" as an inhabitant of either continental North or South America, then TECHNICALLY no.

However, if you look at it in a broad sense, I think he is. Although Cuba is in the Carribbean, Cuba is part of "Latin America," which includes all of the Spanish-speaking nations of the Americas as well as Brazil. Haiti, Martinique, French Guiana, and other Francophone countries are not usually considered as parts of Latin America.

So, Castro is, in the vey least, Latin American, because he is part of the Spanish-speaking cultural sphere.

a million.hemisphere > a million/2 of the terrestrial globe or celestial sphere, esp. between the halves into which the earth is split. Cf. eastern Hemisphere, Western Hemisphere, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere. subsequently, "united states of america" isn't a hemisphere. 2. united stateselectorate are the so referred to as individuals. 3. united states of america has a branch, the NORTH & SOUTH united states of america. 4. FIDEL CASTRO is a CUBAN.
