I my toddler son was counting my teeth, so I counted his. He has an extra tooth, is this okay?
He just went to the dentist, and he goes on a regular basis. Nobody at the office has said anything about his teeth being weird... or maybe one of the dental hygienists didn't catch it? (they are all interns). Anyway, I counted 10 teeth on the bottom, and 11 teeth on top. On his left side of his mouth on the top he has an extra tooth up front... sort of crooked. I never noticed it before I was just examining his mouth. All his teeth are perfectly straight and spaced, but then between his top left central incisor and lateral incisor, he has an extra. It's not an extra molar. Is this strange??? Should I call his pediatric dentist on Monday?? Should I be worried about this?
thanks heimdallen. and it's a baby tooth.. he's only 4. :)

First of all, it's not something you should be very worried about. It is, of course, not "normal", meaning that it's not supposed to be there compared to most people. I'm surprised that no one at the dentist has caught this yet. It's a concern only in regard to the fact that it could cause crowding, too many teeth with limited space for them, of course. This could lead to his teeth on the top becoming crooked as his upper mandible tries to compensate for the extra tooth there. It could also eventually cause some pain, as his other teeth are pushed away to make space for this tooth to fit. Also, is it a baby tooth or an adult tooth? If it's a baby tooth, it might just fall out and not have a replacement waiting to come in. Or, it could have an adult tooth waiting to come in - only an X-ray would reveal this, and I'm assuming he's never had an X-ray done of his mouth or they'd certainly notice the oddity, I'd hope at least.
It doesn't really hurt to have an extra tooth, except that if it falls out and an adult tooth tries to come in there it could cause the crowding and crooked problems I mentioned. If it's an adult tooth and everything in the area is pretty straight, chances are it's not going to change much as everything is already in place. His teeth on either side won't be pushed around to make space if it's already permanently in and has enough space to exist happily there.
Mention it to the dentist the next time you're there and see what they say about it. It's certainly not an urgent and pressing concern though as it's not causing any problems at the present time, so I wouldn't worry much about it for the time being. The dentist will probably want to pull it and then use something like braces or a retainer or something to close the gap and place the rest of his teeth where they're supposed to be, but that doesn't have to be done unless there's some other problem associated with it that the dentist find's out about during an exam. That might just cost money, cause some pain moving the other teeth around, and not really be necessary, so make sure you get a second opinion if there's no good reason given to you other than "it's not supposed to be there".
Don't worry about it much and good luck!
