My son loves cut apples!!?
I read through other answers before posting! I see sliced apples for sale and they don't go bad so how do they do it? They were more for short term like a party when I want to keep an apple for a few days available as a snack choice for my son.
I want to keep fresh fruits available to my son like I do with baby carrots. He loves apples so I cut one tonight and I put in in water in the fridge to try it...I hope I don't have to throw the whole thing out.
He doesn't always want the whole apple. How do I keep it ready to eat for him?
He needs to be able to help himself to a healthy snack besides a bag a chips so all ideas are welcome!! He's pretty independant and likes to serve himself.
Thanks so much for any help

The apples that are for sale sliced are soaked in some type of chemical. There is a product called fruit fresh that you can mix in water and soak fruit in, but I think it gives the fruit a salty taste. Actually, apples that are sliced will keep a couple of days sliced if you put them in a sandwich or snack size zip lock bag, just be sure to squeeze as much air out as you can. Some times they will darken slightly, but still be crisp and good to eat. Other than buying the ones they sell sliced, there is really no way to keep them very long without soaking them in lemon juice or something like the fruit fresh, which effects the taste.

Lemon or any citrus juice works to keep apples from turning brown. The problem is air, actually oxidation. I have also used a bit of lemonade drink mix diluted with water and dipped the apple slices in it. Same thing as the citrus juices; the drink mix has citric acid in it. Lemon lime soda works too in a pinch.
And that's pretty much what they have done with the pre-sliced apples in the store.

a way to keep fruit or vegetables fresh overnight is to put a tiny bit of lemon juice on them, but the taste of apples and lemon might not be too nice.
you could try smaller fruits such as berries or grapes.
or smoothies are always a good idea. :)

Squeeze some lemon juice on them or into the water. The lemon juice is the trick.
