Why capture the few that are left of the wild mustang that are left in the U.S. ?
The govt. passed an ok to round up the wild mustangs due to what is said to be a habitat that cannot support the horses. They are healthy and free running and have been for over one hundred years. but if you see the picts they are bieng put in corals in a large amount and swiped at with sticks and become very unhealthy. check Nevada! Their are not many left so how can there be too many to be not to be as healthy as they are when they are free yet in captivity they become sickly with the abuse and lack of nutrition? Think there are other plans for that land maybe?

This articles http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC278180... is about positive impact of horses on environment.
But there should be some problems with the horses and probably somebody researched the subject. This is to do with food webs. As large herbivore, horse consumes large amount of plants making them unavailable for other fauna. On the other hand, there are no effective natural predators which could control the horse population pruning diseased and weak individuals.
So, there can be a possibility that fearal horses need to be controlled.
I suggest you to research the subject thouroughly. I'm currently reading very interesting article oon food webs but did not get to the part where I could give you more thourough answer.
