How big to red-eared slider turtles get?

Do red-eared sliders grow proportionate to their tanks? I have 2 hatchlings in the small acrylic tank that they came in. How long will they last there before I need a bigger one?

Geographical Region: They are found from Virginia to Florida, west to New Mexico, and south to Brazil.

Size: From 5 to 12 inches with females larger than males.

Habitat: They like calm waters like ponds, marshes, and lakes with soft bottoms and dense vegetation.

Food: Carnivorous when they are young, more herbivorous when they get older. They eat earthworms, crayfish, chicken, fish, insects, and plants and veggies.

Interesting Fact: They are one of the most common pet turtles. ditays

Well, for every inch the RES turtle is, that's how many gallons the tank should hold x10.

So for example, if your hatchling is 1 inch, your tank should be at least 10 gallons.

Also, I suggest separating the RES turtles, because they are not social animals and they can get pretty territorial, which leads to fights and injuries.

Red eared sliders can grow from 8 inches to 12 inches, the females are bigger than the males (you won't know the sex until it is at least 4 inches).

Your "death bowl" is already too small for one hatchling, let alone two. You can figure 10 gallons per inch of shell (cumulative), which would be a minimum of 30 gallons now. However, I think that bottom area is more important than volume. Stiff-sided wading pools make excellent and inexpensive turtle tanks for theis reason.

The record RES was 11 3/8" in carapacial length.

red eared sliders actually get pretty large. a female can get 10-13 inches while a male about 8 -10 inches. those small acrylic tanks are generally only good for a short while. you will need to upgrade in size and filtration very soon.

We have a female RES who is almost 3 inches and she is in a 20 gallon tank made for aquatic turtles.

Their growth depends upon what yu feed them. If you feed them high proteins diet, like fish, shrimps, meat etc, they will rapidly out-size their tank.....................

So either don't feed them high proteins or then get a tank big enough to keep them happy for a while....... I would say something between 55 - 75 gallon tank should do (bigger the better, would last longer). Invest one time and be free of mental worries...........

1 gallon of water not gallon of tank per inch shell length of turtle. they're not fish, they will get to full size no matter how small the tank is.

You will need at least 70 gallons for each turtle. If you keep them in too small of a cage it kills them. http://www.redearslider.com/
