training my dog to play ball?
my dog loves to play ball and has a braided rope she loves to chase. the only problem is she won't drop it when she brings it back to you. she wants you to fight with her (playing) and take it away from her. i want to teach her to drop it when she brings it to me and i don't know how. can anyone tell me how to teach her?
thanks

The way I trained my puppy was to repeat the command "drop it" a few times while removing the ball from his mouth. If he tried to pull on it, I stopped playing. Once he would actually drop the ball, I praised him and then threw it again. He learned that I would only play with him once he dropped the ball now we apply it to all his toys.
I would start this with a ball as ropes typically mean tug-o-war and it is more difficult to train them to drop that but once she has the ball down she should start to understand the command with other toys too. Good luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aNTKl
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

When she comes back to you show her another toy she likes, then throw that one. She should drop the one she brought back in order to go get the new one you threw. Do this back and forth until you can catch her dropping one when she returns to you. Now is the time to teach a command word, such as "drop it". As soon as the returned toy hits the ground, say "drop it" and then when you throw the new one, say "get it". This works great with my puppies when I'm teaching a retrieve, and I hope it works for you as well.

Teaching your dog to fetch is not a good thing. Fetching is an obsessive behavior and should not be tolerated. Why not sign up for some classes such as obedience, agility, rally, fly ball, etc? You can call your local kennel club and get the name of some trainers.

the way i taught my dog to drop it wa i opened his mouth (gently) and let it fall out of his mouth while saying "drop it" every dog is different though and it may not work for her.

there is another way to teach her. it's just about distracting her with treats and getting her to drop it so she can get a treat. good luck!
with our puppy, we're teaching him to catch the frisbee in the air, so playing tug of war is his "treat" when he catches it and brings it back. :)
