This is quite normal, they love to burrow and he is still getting use to a new home. You need to be holding him 2 hours a day so he bonds to you and wants to be with you. When this happens he will here you coming and be out and waiting for you to pick him up.

Thats just the way they are. They like to hide. He'll get more comfortable in his own time.
