Actually only about 4% of Americans are Athiests. The highest population of Athiests are found in France with about 14%. Even communist countries such as China have not succeed in completely irradiating religion. There are only about 2% Athiests in China.

Conservative Christian numbers are on the rise at the moment while liberal denominations are losing members.

Society goes through mood swings from liberal to conservative and at the moment we're leaning to conservative. The decline of religion has been predicted for a long long time, and yet here we are.

Atheism is moving up in the world. As a religion it has many hurdles to overcome (social acceptance in the US comes to mind) but it has progressed so far in the last 100-200 years.

Yes in a manner of speaking, not atheism as much as people not believing in a religion, people are still rather superstitious, if you ask me.
