How can I clean the bathroom without using cleaning sprays?

my mom is a cancer patient, and we have avoided using cleaning sprays because they are toxic, (at least that's what we heard.) Because my mom is still recovering, I have kind of taken over the job of making sure the house stays cleaned. I live in a house with a dad and brother with very bad aim...and it is embarrassing and gross to have to live with. my brother has a girlfriend who practically lives here, and I get so embarrassed when she comes out of the bathroom and has a grossed out look on her face. I know my mom feels bad too. Its hard to disinfect the bathroom without using bleach or a bathroom spray. I have tried using baking soda... that removes the scum in the shower and the tub, but how can I disinfect the floor and toilet without exposing my mom to it? she home my the time I get home from school... so there is no way I could clean it without her being there. I would like to know so I can be more of a help. thanks in advance.

btw, I'm 14. please don't suggest that I talk to my family about it... I have tried that, and its easier to just take care of it without comment. thanks.

Update:

thank you!

You're such a good daughter! Hope Mom continues to do well!

Back to your question. There are several things you can use. White vinegar works great. I keep some in a spray bottle mixed with water, about 50/50 and use that. If you don't like the smell of vinegar there are a couple other things you can use.

One is hydrogen peroxide. The stuff that a lot of people use for cleaning cuts and stuff. It's much safer to use than bleach although I still clean my toilet bowls with bleach. Our water leaves funny colored marks and a bit of bleach takes them off with a splash and a quick scrub with the brush.

I've attached an article for you to read about using hydrogen peroxide to clean with. If Mom is up to spending a little money, investing in a steamer is another great option. And you will need a supply of microfiber cloths to go with the steamer for best results.

Once again, major kudos to you for being such a great daughter!

Use straight vinegar for general cleaning. Use bleach in the toilet if you think it needs it, and it will get rinsed away when you flush. If you want to disinfect surfaces, use rubbing alcohol or some of those wipes you can buy in a plastic can. There is really no need to disinfect the floor. Unless your mom is having the worst chemotherapy in the world, she'll be fine with this stuff. I was during my chemo. And avoid all those fancy cleaning sprays forever. Some of them are terrible chemicals and aren't even good for healthy people to be around. And anyone who uses the bathroom should be washing their hands after they use it anyway, especially your mom. She is the one who needs to avoid infection as much as possible. Tell your brother and dad that if they sprinkle where they shouldn't, why don't they grab a piece of toilet paper and wipe up after themselves? Everyone who lives in a house is partly responsible for keeping it clean.

    Hi,

If you want to disinfect the toilet and floor, spray them first with white vinegar, and then with hyrdogen peroxide. Let them sit about 5 minutes and then wipe the liquid up. That is the cheapest way to do a reasonable job with homemade products and without chemicals that might hurt your Mom, but it is about 75% effective.

If you have about $20 you can spend, go online and find a local representative for Norwex Enviroproducts. (you might have to go to their central website Norwex.com. Tell them your story and they will put you in touch with a local rep. Tell them you want to buy an antibac envirocloth. It is a super-high quality microfiber cloth that will allow you to clean the toilet and floor with very warm water, but just as well as if you were using bleach or something really strong.

If the floor smells bad because of a build-up of stuff, mix a little vinegar with it to help deodorize.

    Best of luck to you!

You poor thing. You are dealing with alot. There are natural cleaning supplies that are not toxic. Look in the cleaning section of your local store. Use ajax/comet on the tub, toliet and sink. Use vinegar and warm/hot water on the floors. I hope this is helpful. Good Luck! I commend you on helping around the house. I wish more teens your age would do the same.

You can use cleaners that you dilute in a bucket of water, such as Mr. Clean or Pine Sol. They both are disinfectants and they smell nice. This is what we used to use before they came out with the spray on bathroom cleaners.
