Anyone know of a free or inexpensive Windows XP friendly DVD ripper/copier? Not for commercial DVDs?

I need to extract different chapters and create AVIs and also copy whole DVDs. These are not copy protected commercial DVDs but home made DVDs. I've tried (can't remember the name unfortunatly) a program that seems to place huge files in mystery places on my hard drive which really is not too cool. Is there a program that just creates an ISO image to burn?
