I would not use them. There is too much of a possibility that poisonous chemicals have leached into the plastic from the oil. If you need plastic buckets to plant in, go to the nearest grocery store that has a bakery. The fillings and frostings that are used at the bakery come in food grade plastic buckets. If you ask, they will save them for you since they just throw them away anyway. To fully clean the buckets, wash with hot soapy water with some vinegar added into the water. I have used these buckets for years to grow vegetables and to store sugar and flour. They are free, heavy duty, work wonderfully, and you don't have to worry about any chemicals since the buckets are food grade plastic.

No.
Plastic is extremely porous, and there just isn't anyway you can get them clean enough to use for vegetables. I suppose if you lined them with super duper construction-quality garbage sacks first, you'd probably be OK, but that can be pricy plus just generates more waste.
What you can do instead is hit the dollar store for sturdy 2 gallon beach buckets ($1 each!!!), search on freecycle.com for someone giving away plastic nursery pots, or buy new buckets at Home Depot for about $5 each.
