to do this you need to find you a small block k- frame to put under it or a big block one if possible but it will work that's the next engine i think i,ll put in mine,i got a 70 dodge dart gt,that right now has a built 318 in it, there's a few of those things running around here that have good running 383,s and 440,s in them though ,we was doing that twenty years ago,the next best thing is a 360,because a 440 weighs a lot and the suspension will have to be upgraded on it also,if your going to build it that good go with a good a 727 tranny with a manual valve body in it ,good luck.

It probably will fit. The 340 fit in the Swinger quite well and making a 440 fit there might be just a little tighter. You might want to beef up the suspenson and add better brakes. Those cars had some of the worst brakes on the road. If you can find a good 340 and automatic tranny, you'll burn up the road everywhere-if only in a straight line. It was quicker than the 4 speed manual. Try and not use any from '73 and later since they're so emissions-equipment choked they only put out half the horsepower of the earlier ones. It would be nice to get the "six-pack" manifold and 3-deuces carbs- fast, but a heavy drinker.

better yet would be to find a 340 small block, it's lighter and you can easily get as much horsepower out of a mildly modified 340 as you can with a stock 440 big block. I have been beaten by small cars with a 340, and I was driving a big block roadrunner. I had a higher top end, but a 340 motor in a Dodge Dart will beat any Corvette or Mustang in city type street racing. Just a subtle swapping of rear end gear ratios will make a 340 a screamer. Add to that a slightly modified induction system, and you will be searching for some fatter back tires, to keep that car hooked up to the pavement, when you step on the gas. You can build a slightly modified 340 Dart that will beat any car from a red light, except maybe a Viper. But hey, at least it's another MoPar

If I were you, I'd start off with a 340 or 360 and have some fun without the headaches. Not only are those engines almost as fast, but you'll be damning yourself a lot less when you work on your car. Get the experience first with the small block and then, maybe in 2 years, move up to the 440 if you feel the need.

A 440 will fit there are kits out there with the right motor mounts for the swap. You may want to upgrade the rear end on the dart to a 8 3/4 or a dana 60 to handle the power.

    70 Dodge Dart

Dodge did that in 1968 (1968 440 M-Code Dart GSS) and 1971 is identical engine bay wise.

A 440 will fit just fine, check out http://engine-swaps.com/ for engine mounts, you'll need a 727 transmission too.

A front suspension upgrade, new brakes, preferably discs, an 8 3/4 rear and bigger radiator would help as well.
