If that strange character is this: ¶, you simply have the hidden formatting characters turned on. Do this to get rid of them:
In versions of Word prior to Word 2007:
1. Click the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar.
In Word 2007:
1. Click the ¶ button in the Paragraph section of the Home tab.
Hope that helps.

If this only happens in Word and all your keys produce the correct character it is just a setting in Word
In Word select "Tools" and scroll down to "Options" in "View" unselect "Paragraph marks"
