You can preallocate virtual memory.
Right click My Computer, Select Properties.
Under the Advanced Tab, Click Setting (Under Performance)
Select Advanced Tab, Click Change (Under Virtual Memory).
The amount of memory can be adjusted if you select Custom Size.
I would preallocate it to 2048 for Initial Size, reboot and you should
have more virtual memory

Why are a lot of people so quick to blame a slow PC on viruses. It is true that most of the time this may be the cause, but several things can cause this, bad hard drive, driver conflicts, low memory, bad memory, Automatic Updates from Microsoft(this is the biggest problem with computers today). This last one is from experience.

The computer uses a lot of virtual memory when there is not enough REAL memory. You need to buy some more RAM. For Windows XP it's best to use a minimum of 1Gbyte of ram. Your machine is painfully slow because I am willing to bet that it only has 256Mb -a quarter of what you really need to run modern apps. The virtual ram will automatically adjust when you put in the extra ram so you will not need to do anything else.

There's commercials for Finally Fast or mycleanpc.com, you might have registry errors, I don't know if that stuff works though. Try downloading a malware detector, there might be spyware on your computer that's slowing everything down.
