My previous boss (approx 5 years ago) said that if they contact you to say that you don't come in to work because of the weather etc, then they are denying you access to work that you were willing to go to, and that they have no right to ask you to make hours up or deduct pay?? I don't know if that still stands but it was a union rep who told her.

yes and they can also have mandatory over time or make you come in early or shorten your lunch to half an hour or switch your days off or any other number of things b/c they are the employers and you are the employee and in todays economy if you don't want to do something they want you to do they can easily fire you and find someone who will. In additon most states are at will employment states which means unless you belong to a union then they can fire you at the drop of a hat, without cause and are not required to tell you why.

Grey area, prob not enough information.
If you where available to work but your employer cancelled your shift they should still pay your wages for the day. If you cancelled, then they could dock your wages for the hours you weren't available to work for them. If they want you to make up the hours out of your normal working hours, you dont need to do it if it doesnt suit you, but then your wages will be short.

If they closed the place, then no, they shut the place, made it impossible for you to work then it's their fault!
But they will probably screw you.
