How does a Tourqe Converter work.?
I do not understand how the touque converter workes. When is it engadged and when is it not. best answer gets 10pt

The torque converter is basically a fluid coupling between the engine and the transmission. It mounts in a housing at the rear of the motor and rides on a shaft that protrudes from the engine. This shaft is the rear of the engine's crankshaft. The crankshaft spins the torque converter. The transmission has a shaft that protrudes from the front of the tranny and when the transmission is bolted to the engine this shaft slides into a corresponding hole of the torque converter. The torque converter is filled with a hydraulic fluid. The torque converter has what looks like turbine blades in it that spin and hydraulic pressure forces another "turbine" to spin the transmission to make the car move. There is NO solid mechanical connection between the engine and automatic tranmission. It is a fluid coupling.

it creates its own oil pressure when revs reach a ceratin speed, it has an impeller, a round disc with baldes on it, bit similar to a jet engine blades, at speed they throw oil around which begins to lock the rotor to the drive, basically it is a bit like a pump,,
bit difficult to explain without using a sketch but you will find more info if you tap in to a serch online
