    1. 1 cup of vinegar in the wash water (use the bleach dispenser) should prevent soap from accumulating on the fibers, and acts as a softener

    2. fabric softener will make them soft, but also less absorbent, so it's a trade off, you just need to decide which one is most important to you (fabric softeners can have some toxic ingredients - so you might want to consider that in your decision-making)

    3. Hard water will also gradually accumulate minerals on the towels, making them less soft - so if you think you have hard water - add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the wash water

    4. if you use powdered detergent, consider switching to liquid, as powdered can be slightly abrasive

Your towels will all stay fluffy if they are totally rinsed of soap. Sometimes soap can make them stiff and scratchy. So easy on the soap. I love to use a fabric softener especially for towels so I use downy fabric softener and put a capful into the last rinse cycle.
