Phi Theta Kappa is an honor Society for community college students. You must be invited by your 2 year college adviser (if it is even at your community college). To be invited, you must have gotten above a 3.5 cumulative community college and have at least 12 units. If invited to join, you have to pay 75$ to join. After joining, you get a special pin, diploma, option of wearing a tassel at your two year graduation symbolizing you are a PTK member, access to collegefish.org in which you can find colleges that offer you scholarships for being a member.
As in the society, you can choose to attend your college's PTK meetings in which they may discuss the theme of the next two years or discuss community service projects they are doing.
You can lose your membership of sorts. After you join you must keep your GPA to above a 3.25 because in theory if you participate in the society's activities then your grade might go down a little. If you get below a 3.25 you have one term to bring it above a 3.25 to be in good standing.
It's a very legitimate honor society. You may be turned off by the 75$ joining fee but it is completely worth it, as I found out just today. I had completed what I wanted out of where I would transfer to which was basically my major and open to any sort of offers. Today, I got a letter from University of Texas - Dallas. They offered me a scholarship that has a net value of 16,000 dollars a year. On top of that 16000/yr, I would also be put under consideration for academic scholarships and financial aid. So, very well over and near close to a full scholarship to attend the university because I was a PTK member.
So think about it. 16000 a year for tuition and housing. After that is subtracted from the costs, I would have about 8000 left which would come from academic scholarships, financial aid, and out of pocket. Not a bad deal. I put in 75 and I get out a total of 31,925 at least.
I completely recommend it! The value is completely worth it. I'm not trying to preach but the offer I got was just amazing!
Good luck and I hope I helped.
