telephone junction box?
OK... I just moved into this old fixer-upper. I've got knowledge of just about everything I need ... except telephone wiring. Here's what I've got.
AT&T phone line comes into house. Has a ground and 2 cables. Cables are split, where there used to be a junction box. Does the telephone company provide the junction box, or do I, the customer? AT&T never came to the house to turn on the telephone, just flipped a switch somewhere. Here is a link to photos I took of the "mess" / "problem" I ran into.

The white cable you see is the cable listed above. The cable above it is a gray cable with Red, Black, Yellow, and Green wire. I need to connect these so that I can use the phone jacks upstairs. First floor has the above (top) mentioned cable. 2nd floor has the RYGB cable.
Thanks in advance!!

that is all inside wiring.. and it is inside your home... you would be responsible for that... there should be a gray box on the outside of your house that says something like "network interface device" on it... this is where the phone company's responsibility ends... they will come down and do work on the customer side of this box, but for a fee....
it does not really look like much of a mess to me...
blue/white = green/red = line 1
orange/white = yellow/black = line 2

The junction box is the phone companies property.
The best way to figure out how to connect the wires outside is by removing a jack and looking at how the wires are connected.
You have the old wire when the red and green was used for the first line and the yellow was used for the light on the phones that had this feature.
You can use the yellow and black for a second line but you would have to unground it at all the jacks in the house.
I didn't look at the photo, but if it's a mess, and has a rubber cover, I would complain to the telephone co. and tell them to replace it with a network interface box. That way you can test you line in the future and the box will replace the mess.

You need to hook up the red and green cables, hook the to the demark the same way they are connected for the first floor. If is not red and green connect the green where the white is connected and the red where the blue is connected that should work. I would also have AT/T come out and replace the demark your's is an antique you need a modern demark so if you have problems you can disconnect the house wiring and check the line. They should do that for free.
