where do proffesional musicians get their samples?

how do music artist record sound samples from things like movies or from music already recorded by other artist. i know you can download from various sites on the internet, but i want to know how the proffesionals do it.

for example:

nine inch nails back in the 80's sampled horror movies as well as a few songs from other artist, i know they didnt use the internet, so how did they do it?

    Musicians rip sounds from all kinds of sources. Before computer technology was so easily and cheaply available, most people would use a hardware sampler. The Akai MPC 2000 was and still is the hardware sampler of choice. You can plug the audio jack from it straight into the headphone jack on a TV, and record. I've done it before and I'm sure it was possible back then.

    Even when these things weren't about, you could still just use tape to sample and record stuff. This technology has been around for longer than you might imagine...well before the 80's. Anything that can be recorded can be sampled.

    @ eric - Clearly, you don't know what you're talking about. Unless you exclusively listen to live music, you will have enjoyed samples in your past. It's a recognized, creative element of modern music. I suppose you're against things like drum machines too? Back to the dark ages...let's go.

    To my way of thinking, any good Professional Musician that has to use Samples isn't a Musician..
