What is happening with Toyota? Why so many car recalls?
Toyota is well known for it reliability, quality standards,... but suddenly it starts recalling thousands of cars of all models due to safety/mechanical problems.
What happened? New quality policy?

This is all a big Hype, the Government is putting a fear into people so they can trade their foreign cars for American car to aid the economy as well as American car companies.
Every car company makes recalls.....Its how they improve, no recall means sit there quietly and expect constant abuse and lack of sales/trust from customers.
Ford:

GM: (Kinda old)

Just look at all the recalls:
http://www.sacbee.com/trafficnews/story/2534453.ht...
Just imagine if GM had this problem, they wouldn't even have the money to make such a huge recall....
The Japan pedals (Denso) are good.....all the recalls that were made included the pedals which were made in USA
LaHood actually now admits and apologizes to the public about how he made a mistake about how dangerous toyota's are.
so far they're winning, Chrysler has no hope, and I am sick of paying my money to American car companies failure just because they're not good at running their business ....Why do I have to pay high taxes for their stupidity???

Point is, no matter what you drive, doesn't really matter. What matters is how you take care of what you drive. Constant abuse + lack of maintenance + human error is what kills people. Not: "OH I DRIVE A TOYOTA IM GONNA DIE"
There's no such thing as a good reliable car.......if you fail to maintain it properly, then there you go......Nothing in this world is perfect, you might as well just stop driving if you think you own a death car....any car can become a death car.
Nationalist would disagree with me because their small brains cannot comprehend anything I wrote here....

I agree with Chris2em. People need to stop freaking out. Its a recall, not a death sentence. Toyota was never a bad company. They arent perfect, thus they are subject to mistakes. The recall most likely happened because Toyota expanded its operations into North America, where quality control is significantly lower than Japan. The faulty accelerator pedal was due to an American company, a supplier, which sells parts to Toyota. For those who are stressing buying American made cars, there is nothing wrong with buying an import. Toyota and Honda have American divisions, so arent they just as American as Ford and GM, which are both worldwide. There is no such thing as an "American car company".

It has happened with pretty much every company in existence. Start from humble beginnings, build a name and a reputation, then ride on your good name until things start falling apart.
The domestic manufacturer's reached that crescendo in the 1960s. Only Ford seems to have brought themselves back around (while Dodge has probably made themselves worse even in spite of MB technology).
The biggest impact for Toyota drivers will be increase of their relatively low depreciation as people realize Toyota isn't as bullet-proof as they used to be.
Look for the Korean car manufacturer's to take over the reigns of quality (already have some of the best warranties in the biz), the Big Three to gain back some ground, and the leveling of pricing from Japanese manufacturer's.

Hopefully there will be a better quality policy. They're having problems with an accelerator getting stuck. They've covered this up for 8 years at least rather than repairing the process that produced this issue.

There has never been a single automaker that hasn't turned out a few bad apples: that'll happen when you mass produce, but Toyota is one of the biggest automakers, so if .01% of vehicles have a given problem, then it appears much bigger because of sheer numbers. To be fair though, it's not entirely random. Other companies like Chevrolet and Mercedes-Benz have been making cars with electronic throttle controls, and I haven't heard of a single problem with those cars, so I guess GM and Mercedes-Benz have done their R&D work. Times have changed.

I believe people aren't being fair to Toyota. How many recalls and investigations has Ford, Chrysler, Volkswagen or other manufactures had for sudden accelerations, rollovers, leaking gas tanks, or cars just bursting into flames? Or what about the recalls and investigation that aren't being reported? Why are people suddenly going after and piling up on Toyota about everything now? I just find all this to be very strange. Is Toyota crashing is it something else? If you have any knowledge of the auto industry, you'll know that every major automaker on the planet has recalls to fix problems. Recalls shouldn't scare people, they're are a part of being in the car business and are usually nothing to even worry about.
But I'm not saying Toyota hasn't done anything wrong. The best and the worst companies will screw up and produce faulty cars every now and then. Car companies usually fix problems, issue service bulletins and/or have recalls without you ever knowing about it. If they see problems, they usually get ahead of them before they fly out of control...
...I believe that's where Toyota failed miserably.
Toyota's biggest problems aren't being created by stuck accelerator pedals, bad brakes or by any other recalls they may be having, it has everything to do with how they've handle this problem. They were too slow in fixing or even admitting that they had a problems. After the media, the government and the the "Don't buy foreign" Toyota haters got a hold of it, they just started running amok with it. People are now being misinformed, they're being needlessly scared, and believe things about Toyota that aren't true...It needs to stop. I'm not saying people need to go on easy Toyota and forget this, I just wish people would stop believe everything that's being said about Toyota. Toyota builds thousands of good, safe cars for every car that is experiencing the problems you're seeing. Yes, it's a serious problem and Toyota needs to makes serious changes, but people need to stop believing that Toyota is plummeting over night in quality .

There was a time when QUALITY was first priority. NOW, in their zeal to be #1 in the world, and of course, the need to please stock holders, cost cutting has moved quality to a lower level of importance.
(the above is strictly my opinion, and may be completely wrong)
